Default PS3 suddenly skipping during movie playback? Help!

I have a PS3 slim and have ever had any problems with it.

Yesterday I tried to watch a blu-ray and it was skipping all over. In the middle of a scene it would skip to the next chapter, or skip back to the beginning of the current chapter, or both. Every couple minutes it would do this, jumping all over the place.
I checked the disc and it is completely clean, but I figured it must be a disc problem and planned to return it ...but then when I tried another movie and it did the exact same thing.

I have never ha this problem before, but with it now happening on multiple discs, I assume it's the player. Any ideas? Something I need to do, or is it shot?

The laser is the number one thing to go on the Playstation and cause playback problems.

No cleaning wouldn't fix it,if it is indeed the laser then replace it.
I replaced mine,I googled it and found a local guy who charged me £45 for laser and labour.
It has worked fine ever since.

EDIT:There are tutorials on YouTube if you think you are technical minded enough to attempt it yourself.

Have you tried doing a reset?i forget off the top of my head the exact sequence but if you google that you will find it.
There are two options with the second one wiping all that you have saved.

My experience is that if skipping and stuttering is occurring on several discs it is time for replacement. That is why I always make sure I have cover for PS3. Too expensive to replace after guarantee. At least it was until recent months.

I would recommend first a full reset of the software of the PS3 and see if that helps.

If not then replacement of the piece is needed or just get a new one and sell the old one for pieces on eBay.

What blu-ray was it? If it was an old Lionsgate title that may be the problem. My Weeds season Two disc did the same thing but others work fine.
