the HD-DVD side of AVSF is buzzing with news that Walmart had commissioned HD-DVD players from a Chinese manufacturer. Have any of you guys heard that?

Hopefully Sanyo will go BLU-RAY since Walmart carries a lot of exclusive Sanyo products. 40% of all the DVD movies sold in the US are from Walmart. Walmart can be a key player in this format war. |

Wal-Mart CAN be a major player, but as of now they are not. First they have to have HD movies available in all their stores. I have only heard of maybe 2 Wal-Marts in all of Atlanta and surrounding areas that carry HD titles.
In comparison, just about EVERY (if not every) Best Buy in Atlanta and the surrounding areas have HD titles. Wal-Mart is not a major player in this format war so far. |

Here is the "rumour" link: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...2&page=4&pp=30 How would Blu Ray react if indeed this has some truth to it? They seem caught off guard even by Samsung going combo. And we have yet to see any significant movement to even challenge Toshiba's pricing. Last edited by blublublu; 04-20-2007 at 04:23 AM. |

As far as the 2 million HD DVD player are concerned, they can't really sell the $309 units they have now. What's another 100 bucks off the top? Last edited by Ascended_Saiyan; 04-20-2007 at 05:00 AM. |

someone at the AVS is trying to pass off THAT the CHEAP HD-DVD PLAYERS ARE COMEING THROUGH WALL MART....
Fuh Yuan will make two million HD-DVD players for Walmart The following site is in Chinese. It basically says that Fuh Yuan electronic corporation from Taiwan just built a new factory to manufacture blue laser HD-DVD cores. This core is independently developed by Fuh Yuan, and is a joint project with TDK. The production will be handled by Great Wall corporation in China. An interesting thing is that it mentioned that Fuh Yuan got a two million units order from Wal-Mart, worth USD$100 million. Since Wal-Mart does not sell blue laser core, I assume it would be players. Fuh Yuan's stock will be released by July 12th, and will be publicly traded next March. It is a press release. Fuh Yuan has a similar news on its Chinese website, but not on its English version. Link: http://www.ettoday.com/2007/04/16/320-2082635.htm Fuh Yuan website: http://www.fuhyuan.com/ Edit: Possible price: $299, see link here (again, Chinese): http://www.udn.com/2007/4/16/NEWS/S...5/3804769.shtml Edit: The price link edited. It works now NOW NOTICE THIS Tide Fuyuan Technology (Shenzhen) Co Ltd Tide Fuyuan was founded in 1993 as one of the largest floppy disc manufacturers in mainland China. As an appointed manufacturer of Sony Discs, we share 70% of the floppy disk sales amount in Chinese market now. We also develop and manufacture other data storage products such as CD-R, DVDR discs and USB flash drives, etc. http://cndatace.manufacturer.globals...2/Homepage.htm Q: does TDK make HD-DVD disc's Q: does TDK make Blu-ray discs ![]() ps: http://www.made-in-china.com/trade-o...al-Burner.html |

Does it matter? Those fools will spend three months acting like it is fact.
BD companies say: Look for $600 and $500 SRP players coming. People say: OK, but what are you doing about the price relative to the fairy tales being proposed for HD DVD? BD companies say: Umm.... Really, how many HD DVD players are going to sell when they are going around telling anyone who will listen that they will $199 in six months? Four HD DVD Players Anyone notice that of the four HD DVD players listed, none are actually HD DVD players? Wanna bet Wal-mart has signed deal for HD upscaling DVD players? Gary |

Looking at those specs they have to be SD DVD players. It is mandatory for HD DVD players to have ethernet ports and decode at least 2 channels of TrueHD, right? There isn't even any mention of HDMI on those either. As dialog_gvf mentioned, those players aren't HD DVD compliant from what is listed.
I definitely agree. Last edited by Ascended_Saiyan; 04-20-2007 at 08:57 AM. |

We need somebody who can read Chinese to decipher the ETToday page. The Cryptex cipher is not needed, I think.

Chilly relations
Why the spin? Well, this move is obviously exasperating an already chilly relationship between Microsoft and Google. Last Friday Google beat out Microsoft and Yahoo to buy web ad supplier DoubleClick, securing a leadership position as the internet's top advertising business. Microsoft are expected to urge regulators to closely scrutinise the search leader's $US3.1bn deal to buy DoubleClick. They say that the deal would allow Google to corner the online advertising market and provide them access to a huge amount of information on consumer behaviour on the internet. At least Microsoft is proving irony is not dead. Microsoft and antitrust legislation are virtually synonymous after the integrated internet browser debacle the past few years. Microsoft jumping up and down shouting that big bad Google is taking over online advertising is slightly hypocritical. It is understandable that Microsoft would be upset though. Microsoft was set to purchase DoubleClick for $2bn before Google swooped in with a massive war chest and bought up one of few large advertising players left, a field in which Microsoft desperately needed some headway. http://www.fin24.co.za/articles/defa...2-2090_2101815 PRICELESS...... ![]() Last edited by GoldenRedux; 04-20-2007 at 01:39 PM. |

'Eh...
With a little sleuthing, a Toshiba player can be found for under $300. Besides, it doesn't matter if the players drop to $199, most consumers won't see the cost/benefit ratio as worthwhile, especially considering we have $30 SD DVD players, the overall lack of HD titles. J6P says, ooh HD for $200! Okay, where's that POTC movie. Oh, it's Blu-Ray. Okay, where's Kill Bill? Oh, it's Blu-Ray too. Hmm, I know! How about that movie the kids loved, The Incredibles? Dang, Blu-Ray too. I rest my case. |

By the time these players are out, isn't HD-DVD supposed to be dead. Not even all of universals big titles on HD-DVD can save it now from getting killed.
I just came accross this: http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2007/0..._dvd_play.html and thought what a load of bull, why would you want to invest in something that looks like it will be on life support and not in it's coffin *rolls eyes towards M$, and lose a load of money. M$ deliberately made this format war prolong, they're not one hundred percent HD-DVD, they just did it to try to refine their own movie download service to a point where they seem to be able to compete with blu-ray or HD-DVD. |

I sort of wonder about the authenticity of this when I think about Wal-Mart and their confidentiality. Do they really allow companies with whom they place $100 million orders to announce their strategic marketing plans? Is this possibly a huge hoax?
