Currently it doesn't reach full load unless it plays back 2 AVC streams in Picture-in-Picture while running high-load BD-Java.

Totally awesome. My PC can't even playback one 480p Quicktime file, nevermind two 40 Mbps 1080p AVC streams.

Question: what does it mean for the 1080 deinterlacing? Will it improve graphics or just help people out who have older sets?

First of all, I didn't know that. It sorta makes what he said make more sense. If that makes any sense. lol.

My conclusion was based on the fact that I thought the ps store update counted as part of the major quarterly update. Knowing what I know now, we may still get DTS HD-MA this quarter. I guess I shouldn't speak before I know the facts.

But on a lighter note, I did learn a little more.
Also, does anyone know when Q1 began for Sony?

The PS3 didn't get the 1.1 profile update until after the Panasonic BD30 was released. I expect the same thing for DTS HD MA. After the Panny BD50 is released, the PS3 will get the update.

that's a logical conclusion... when is the BD50 being released?

Taking a 1080i source and deinterlacing it to make it 1080p, I believe. I only see this as an issue with downloaded or saved HD broadcast content, since BD's are all supposed to be 1080p.

But the PS3 got BD-Live before any BD-Live standalone player was released. That old argument has fallen apart. Sony doesn't need to do Panasonic any favors by holding back on DTS HD MA.

Not all BD's are 1080p. I know that the Nine Inch Nails video I have is 1080i.

So's the Alice Cooper live BD, but I believe someone in this thread already mention that alot of live concert BDs shot w/ hd cameras are also 1080i. Any non concerts in 1080i (other than Terminator 3)

A product is only as good as it will be in the end. I'd say the PS3 is pretty much the champion this generation.

I think it's safe to say that standalone Blu-ray player releases have no bearing on PS3 Blu-ray firmware upgrades. The PS3 engineers release stuff when they think it's ready. They've been published in a number of interviews, and it really seems like they work in a vacuum. They really seem dedicated to making the PS3 as good as it can be.

OK, this is probably a silly question, but how does one go about updating a PS3? Can you call Sony and request an update disc or do you have to do it off the net? I ask becasue I don't have hi-speed access where I live so if I have to us the net it wall make it that much more difficult. Any help here will be greatly appreciated.

Despite having slow internet I still think it might be the way to go. Check out the link in the first page of this thread https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=3545 (sorry I can't post the link directly but I'm at work and it's blocked ). It will give you more detail if they will ship you a disk, I would imagine they will, but downloading it with a dial-up connection will still be faster than good ol' USPS.

If you chose the net route, just go to the update option and select to use the internet (detailed in the manual) and it will walk you through the process. You could always do it before you go to sleep or something along those lines.

Hope this actually helped and that I didn't point you in the exact direction you were trying to avoid.

Nope, appreciate the help. My son has an 80 gig unit that I bought him a while back and I wouldn't mind updating it to the latest firmware but wasn't sure how to go about it.

Apart from the occasional concert video and screwed up BD release *cough*T3*cough*, going forward I don't think we'll see 1080i bd's. What's really weird is that most tv's will de-interlace the picture for you anyway, so I'm not sure as to the strength of this feature.

Default DTS-HD MA is confirmed. Yipee!

Interview with SCE engineers

Quote:
Future firmware updates will include 1080 deinterlacing and DTS-HD MA, much to the joy of serious home theater buffs. Expect updates to happen quarterly -- although the revised PS Store will break from that planned cycle.

Sweet. DTS-HD is confirmed. About time.

What does this "deinterlacing" do?
