Massive Van Damme fan!! This looks like it could be his best film since Timecop! Looking forward to picking up The Shepard!

I agree, looking forward to Sin City 2. I also agree about Bale. Statham, Smith, are already action stars. Shia le Boeuf? God no, we all have certain actors that get on our nerves, for myself, this kid is one of them. Doesn't look like he could fight his way out of a paper bag.

while i don't consider bale as an action star, i consider bale as the next tom cruise that can play a wide range of roles as he has already proven.

next action star this is a stretch how about ryan reynolds?

One thing that a lot of people are missing is that the defintion of an action star is not the same as it was in the 80's. The 80's were really defined by bad plots, guns guns guns, kill everyone mentality, and over the top action scences. They became blockbusters and made a ton of money doing it. A handful of actors became action stars becuase that is all they did, Steven Segal is another example of what was.

The action star as we knew it in the 80's does not exist and is not coming back. While we all would love to see the next incarnation of Arnold, it isn't going to happen. The new action star is not a brawny muscle bound, hold you by one leg and drop you over a cliff type of guy. They are smart, fast, fit but not bulging with a wicked sense of humor. They have a sort of average guy aura about them and they certainly don't look larger than life.

The debate could go on for eternity, but it is very fun debate!! All of the names being thrown around are great in action movied, but they are so much more than just action stars. Jason Statham really is the singular stand out action star. While it may be true that his movies aren't setting any blockbuster records, he and his movies closest to having the 80's action movie feel about them and he is one of a small number of actors, devouting their career to the action genre.

The Rock had a good couple action movies, then went off into comedy and family flicks, and I'm not sure if we'll see a return to the real action movies. I enjoyed Scorpion King and Rundown as good, near 80s kind of pure action fun flicks. But seems he's not doing those much now. I think a lot of people thought Vin Diesel would go that way, but that fizzled.

What about the Jackie Chan types? Jackie himself is starting to get too old for that kind of action. What kung fu wizard is gonna replace him? And I mean the more realistic/believable kung fu stuff, not the crazy wire stuff like Steven Chow does.

Yeah, I'd vote for The Rock too. He is a pretty good actor and likeable guy.

I'm also glad to see Van Damme making good films now. I have all of his films (barring the latest) and am a big fan. Some are better than others, but he has done some excellent films recently (Wake of Death, Until Death, In Hell). I always found him a likeable unpretentious action star (kind of like The Rock is I guess). And Van Damme didn't mind taking a beating in his films. Unlike Seagal who basically never got touched...

Paul Walker has promise. Jason Statham probably already is one.

I'm waiting for an announcement. Would be very cool, the Rock needs an action film that is well known and has the potential to be huge. It will solidify him even more.

But I don't think we will see action heroes like we know them from the 80s for quite some time. Those days are just over. Nowadays you also want a bit more of a storyline to the movie and not just brainless action and one liners (don't get me wrong... I WILL pick up Commando and Cobra - if it'll be released) I think the time of those "heroes" are just long gone... compare it to the likes of Steve McQueen and Gene Hackman in the 60s/70s and then you had all the John Wayne western before that in the 50s... we need something new, and this will hopefully not be full on CGI!!
Cobra was one very badass movie. Loved it. Just saw the review for Commando, I really want a better picture than the standard dvd I have....

Ha! Shia would disintegrate from the effort of attempting to hold Stalone's jock.

I think you guys are right on Statham. Though he seems more a thinking action hero than a pure action hero. I can't imagine him walking into the bad guy's mansion wielding dual M60s like you can Sly or Arnold.

I think the closest thing we have to an 80's-era action star right now is Vin Diesel. After that would be the Rock.
