I hope Series One will be released separately because I don't really want the crummy David Tennant years.

The series was NOT shot in HD or at 1080p until right at the end of David Tennants series because that buffoon Russel T Davies insisted HD was not worth the extra money it would cost to shoot the show at 1080p.

This box set is just an attempt to screw gullible fans out of more money. If you want an example of how bad the "upsized" versions will look compared to episodes that WERE shot in HD just look at the first Blu-Ray the BBC put out in the UK with the upsized David Tennant "specials" episode (the one with the bus in the desert as I recall). It is DVD quality and the poor quality shines out when compared with the other episodes on that disk that genuinely were shot at 1080 resolution.

"Farscape" already showed that releasing SD TV shows on Blu-ray and pretending they were somehow going to be miraculously improved over the DVD versions by being "remastered for HD" was a complete nonsense. This will be no different.

I think it all depends on exactly what they do with the remastering.

If you take a look at the results of both Star Trek:TOS and Star Trek:TNG, both obviously not shot with HD in mind, the remastered 1080p results are stunning!!

So, I live in hope that they are going to do the necessary work to achieve similar results

Those series were shot on 35mm film. Who was shot on SD digital video. for its first four seasons.

If you want to see how poor this stuff looks check out the afore-mentioned "Farscape" blu-ray set (pay 10x the price of the DVDs that are in all the sales just to own the same stuff in a different format) or "The Doctor Who Specials" where the first story (the bus in the desert story) was shot in SD unlike the other specials.

Like I said, it's a con to make gullible fans think it MIGHT be another "The Prisoner", "Star Trek TOS" or "Star Trek TNG" (which were superb - again because they were shot on 35mm film NOT SD digital)

Ahh, that doesn't sound good then

That's a shame, as I loved to first 4 seasons of Dr Who...

Thanks for the info. I've just cancelled my pre-order, and I will wait and see what the reviews say, but I'm not hopeful now!

Actually, the first episode in the "Tennant Specials" was called "The Next Doctor" and that was shot in SD and upconverted to HD, ur thinking of "Planet of the Dead" which is the first episode shot in HD for Doctor Who and the 2nd episode out of the 4 "Tennant Specials!" Just making a "Whovian clarification" haha!

It's too bad you choose to be insultingly condescending of fans like myself - I am not gullible at all. I've known for a long time the first four seasons were filmed in SD. I still welcome the news of this new set, even though I realize the improvement in IQ for those seasons might be marginal at best. It's still awfully exciting news!!!!

Tenant played Tenant. A shouty version. Never for one moment thought he was "the Doctor" myself. Seemed to be there mainly to attract a female audience (which worked).

You're right. My memory's gone to pot. I just remember putting the Blu-ray in and finding "the jaggies" so unbearable I couldn't watch any more.

Interesting that you see yourself as one of a group of people who I felt were going to get ripped off when in fact my comments were made about the casual fan new to Blu-ray rather than a Who anorak like yourself (anybody who takes such a knee-jerk thin-skinned reaction and who proudly boasts that they LOVE David Tennant is an "anorak" in my book :-P)

So it sounds like you're a Blu-ray fan who's done his homework. But it's somewhat arrogant of you to assume all fans and potential purchaser of this title are trainspotter fans like you who will see the "remastered for 1080p" as the shuckster's con it is and not care anyway? The fact that one of just a handful of replies in this thread has indicated the expectation that this could be as good a job as was done for Star Trek shows that unfortunately my assumptions about what people know about Blu-ray, based on family and friends, were not THAT wide off the mark.

Yeah, it's not the greatest picture quality in the world, but it's as good as it's gonna get, I wish they were all filmed on film, but that's way too expensive for a tv show to do plus it's easier to do all the effects and stuff with digital video vs. film, but it would have made the picture quality amazing!!
