You can go to Onkyo's website and many other websites and they'll tell you it does all HD audio formats. You can check this review too for the SP-908. The 605 plus the $300 speaker package isn't some $500 Yamaha HTIB. You must remember, this package used to retail for about $1100 if I am not mistaking. The sub will be more than satisfying(trust me), the reciever will blow you away, there will be practically no distortion, and you can always upgrade. For my recommendation, I'd get upgraded fronts to go along with it along with my other recommendations. You just don't know how good Onkyo is until you experience it.

P.S. Never go to the stores and listen to the audio setups. 99% of the time, they are never calibrated or properly set up.

7.2 is with 2 subs. With the SP-908, you can always buy a splitter and another, same, sub to get 7.2. (GET THE SP-908!)

For someone wanting to dip their toe into lossless audio possibilities, is the Onkyo HT-SP908 the best budget buy out there? It's honestly a little above my price range, but my current HTiB sucks. I need something that includes speakers, but don't need a dvd player.

I'm not an audiophile, but I would like to get more out of my BD's. I have a PS3 and a 42" 1080p LCD, with a max viewing distance of about 8 feet. I don't really have the room for more than 5.1 currently, and have an 80+ year old house, so cutting into the walls/ceiling isn't something I want to get into.

Any suggestions are welcome.
yes the SP908 is the best budget buy out there!! How can 769.99 with free shipping and no tax from vanns.com be too much for what you get. Just because you don't need a upconverting dvd player doesn't mean you can't give it away or use it on a different TV. I put mine into the master bedroom and then when I bought my second PS3 I put the Onkyo DVD player into my son's room. Who says you can't use a wireless rear transmitter system for the extra speakers ? No need to hack up your house but then again it may add a small value to your home because a room is wired for sound. Just to let you know I will be buying anther SP908 system for the master bedroom just to enjoy my Blu's in there! I AM IN NO WAY AND AUDIOPHILE I JUST WANT TO ENJOY ALL THAT BLU RAY HAS TO OFFER

I suggest you wait until you get the money to get a descent system (or "buy now pay later"). You can get an HTIB if you can't wait but don't expect "really nice quality".
My " really nice quality" may be different from yours and so may others on this forum. Why should anyone suggest to someone who has put hard earn cash on a HDTV and BLURAY player that because it is a great starter system it may not be worth it. Maybe I jumping the gun here, let me know if I am.

Don't buy it from Vanns.com. Buy it from Amazon for $699. It's cheaper there. Otherwise, by all means, get the SP908!

The SP-908 used to retail over $1000! The SP-908 is his best bet.

I'm talking about the Yamaha HTIB's (my friend has a 5.1 Yamaha HTIB which cost over $500 and it sucks sound wise) not the reciever somebody mentioned. I am in no way saying Yamaha sucks but I think that Onkyo is best with HTIBs value wise and quality wise. The benefit of having 2 subs is that you get significantly better sound, although a reciever that has 7.2 is probably equivalent to having a splitter you can get for cheap for the 908.

You waited too long! Amazon bumped it up to $789. Looks like you're going to have to wait.

I for one don't have any hate against HTiB as long as it's a good package, and with multiple votes for the 908, that's where I personally will be shooting (once Amazon drops the prices again). I'm sure the Yamaha is good as well, but the Onkyo seems to fit my needs better.

Sorry for the hijack, and thanks for the advice.

OK the Onkyo is the reciever and speakers which arent that great.
The Yamaha is only the reciver for 500. Plus speakers which are about 499. For 7.1

Fine. I just think you should get something like an Onkyo 805 if you just want the reciever. Start with the reciever first, then the speakers.

P.S. You have to wait for the reciever to come back in stock. That is one of Onkyo's best, way better than the Yamaha reciever you're talking about.

1) Best Buy doesn't carry Onkyo
2) Zone 2 is assignable which means you can switch from stereo speakers to 7.1.(The stereo being somewhere else)
3) As long as you have long enough wire, you can put the speakers where ever you want.
4) I think that you will benefit most from this THX reciever from Onkyo
5) If you are skeptical of Ecost, don't be. They are very reliable and are becoming popular. They are authorized Onkyo resellers from what I understand.
6) The 805 at this point is your best bet.

What about the 605? Only lacks a HDMI input as far as i can tell and is only 279.99 on ecost.

It lacks THX, better upscaling, the ability to take 5.1 uncompressed to 7.1, Brown-DAC's for cleaner sound, more inputs and a little more. Of course, the 705 is the one I'd choose, right now, Ecost doesn't have them recertified so they cost more than the 805. If you're looking for something more basic, look at the 605. It's still good!

Is this recertified and what does that mean?
