Default NBC's "Rosemary's Baby"

Quote:
The Summer 2013 Press Tour of the Television Critics Association is underway. It was there where NBC revealed plans for a limited-run series based on ROSEMARY’S BABY.

Announced alongside four shows of the same limited ilk, including a new version of Stephen King’s THE TOMMYKNOCKERS (previously adapted by ABC and director John Power in 1993), not much is known yet regarding the ROSEMARY redo. Interestingly, the “going back to the source” rationale that many studios/networks fall back on justifying remakes holds little water here, since the essential Roman Polanski film is remarkably faithful to the Ira Levin novel of the same name. Both that film and book tell of a young woman impregnated with

NBC also reportedly called the upcoming ROSEMARY’S BABY something of a “resetting.” Does that mean they’re hoping to expand and move on from the original story? It won’t be the first time Rosemary Woodhouse came to television, as the 1976 film LOOK WHAT’S HAPPENED TO ROSEMARY’S BABY starring Patty Duke, attempted to continue the tale

This might be something I'm interested in, providing they would have great story-telling!

Quote:

tca summer 2013 press tour: Nbc rebooting rosemary's baby and stephen king's tommyknockers the television critics association's summer 2013 press tour is in full swing, and today it's nbc's turn to share some news. With the recent success of "hannibal" and "bates motel," is it any wonder they're talking more short-form series based on popular horror titles?

The network is in early development on a handful of new projects, including a “rosemary’s baby” miniseries along with “stephen king’s tommyknockers.” (they also announced a behind-the-scenes look at hillary rodham clinton and “plymouth,” based on the epic story of the mayflower’s landing in america.)

excerpts from the press release:
“rosemary’s baby” is a four-hour updated retelling of the bestselling novel by ira levin that was later adapted as a feature film about devil worship and the complex relationship between a young husband and wife. In the new version the couple lives in paris, where this edge-of-your-seat thriller unfolds. Lionsgate is the production company. Scott abbott (“introducing dorothy dandridge,” “winchell”) will serve as writer on “rosemary’s baby.” executive producers are joshua maurer, david stern, perri kipperman, and alix witlin.

“stephen king’s tommyknockers” is based on the renowned author’s chilling 1987 novel about how the residents of a small maine town deal with what they believe is an alien spacecraft that has landed nearby. Executive producers are frank konigsberg and larry sanitsky. Emmy award winner yves simoneau (“bury my heart at wounded knee”) is attached to direct.

Look for more on both of these projects soon as well as further news from the tca summer 2013 press tour

God - what a depressing state of affairs. This is the level of imagination? A re-do of ROSEMARY'S BABY? I mean, it may be ok, because it's a great story but really - why? Polanski's film is virtually perfect but it'll be spoiled for kids if they see this first.

They're just going to keep doing this, wait and see. TV miniseries re-do's of THE GODFATHER, THE EXORCIST etc etc

Brilliant, execs. Well done. Take a bow.

NBC Greenlights ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ Miniseries

Quote:
Nearly a week after the success of its live broadcast “The Sound of Music” musical, NBC has officially greenlit another version of a classic project and will be airing a four-hour miniseries adaptation of “Rosemary’s Baby.”

Scott Abbott and James Wong are writing the screenplay based on the 1967 Ira Levin novel about the problems that arise when a young married couple who move into a haunted Paris apartment. Agnieszka Holland will direct. Lionsgate Television is producing, with Joshua Maurer, Alix Witlin and David Stern serving as executive producers. The project was announced as in development in July.

“Ira Levin’s mesmerizing book was a groundbreaking reflection on how effective and influential a psychological thriller could be,” said Quinn Taylor, Executive Vice President, Movies, Miniseries and International Co-Productions, NBC Entertainment. “We’re looking forward to adapting his incredible work and bringing those indelible characters to a new generation of viewers.”

Looks good. And sounds good. Since I refuse to watch the Polanski film anymore.

That trailer is offensive (and so was the movie). To suggest witches would do something like. Instead of the line "they're witches" it should have been "they're satanists"

Anyone watching this tonight? I'm recording it. Never seen the original movie though, but it's on Netflix. Not sure if it would be better to see the original before or after the new NBC show.

I really enjoyed it playing up xenophobia in that way only truly American productions can; taking the premise that enlightened chic French people are really just satanists who will corrupt and destroy you!

This was predictably pointless.

It's such a good basic story that they couldn't mess it up completely so it's watchable. But I can't see how any of the changes they've made improve on the original; and I'm sad that many people will see this before/rather than the brilliant Polanski version.
