Talking Does anyone actually use BDXL format? (both 100GB&128GB write-once and re-writable)?

a single RE disc or R disc costs just as much as the drive itself. it's a bit ridiculous.

i'm trying to decide whether to get the UJ-240 or UJ-260...

240 does not support BDXL

260 does... but it's not like i'm ever going to use BDXL...

it's like my LG combo drive that reads HD DVD. while that is great... i no longer have any HD DVDs to use !!!!

BDXL=waste of money or some use?

I would wait to see if this BDXL format will go through tho. last I heard the discs are not compatible with bluray players out in the market right now and I highly doubt it the average people would invest more money in another bluray player just for the BDXL. now with the new 4K tech coming around the corner, if they use BDXL for it is another story.

i ain't waiting. as far as I am concerned it's pretty much a dead format. Panasonic is the only one invested on it.

I need a BD burner for my laptop right now, not 5 yrs from now =P.

if it becomes popular, i'm sure I can replace the burner once again

Companies will most likely use this. Sony and Panasonic are set to Develop a Next-Generation Optical Disc, the two companies are planning to have a disc with recording capacity of at least 300GB topping out at 1.5 TB by the end of 2015.

ummm, most companies are going with cloud-backup or USB-HDD or tape-based backup. they are not going to buy super-expensive optical drives and discs around. lolz... anyways i'm going with a burner that does not burn BDXL, since it is already being replaced/phased out with yet another next gen optical disc.

Only very small mom & pop companies would consider backing up to USB HDD.

Sony & Panasonic are pitching their optical archive solutions as a rival to tape. In fact Sony have stopped developing LTO products completely.

Optical discs are potentially a better archival solution than tape, with longer time between migration.

Recordable optical discs can also last up to 100 years and are 100% immune to being erased from an EMP or other strong magnetic forces.

Also, another advantage of optical media is that it is very durable so you don’t have to worry as much about the environment as with LTO tape ( https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...pe#post7910837 ).

One has to balance all the advantages and disadvantages of LTO tape vs. optical media for the job at hand. For shorter term storage, at the current time LTO still holds the advantage of quicker read/write access times over optical.

I have a BDXL burner, but, I have only been burning just 25GB BD-R discs for backing up data.

Random access times of Sony's optical archive solution are much faster than tape... sequential read/write is much slower.

Ultimately, as you say, customers will need to choose based on their needs. I notice Sony announced some new drives recently so they seem to be fully behind it. I don't know anyone who has purchased one yet.

I think that big disc size is only for commercial usage.

I'm planning on getting a BDXL disc once I get the Director's Cut of my first film finished and my second film edited and completed. I need to back them up in other places than just my hard drive. I think making a master disc that has HD copies and will hold multiple will do just fine for archiving my work.
