They're done with converting traditional 2D animation...

The Pixar stuff was already in the works by Pixar.

I know I'll end up getting every Pixar 3D release they put out, if the quality of Nemo, Up and Monsters Inc is any indication I will not be disappointed.

Can I say (I must be in the minority here) this is one of my alltime favorite movies....yeah ok I'm a bit of a "petrolhead" but I'm also (shock horror) 40 years old!

You really need to look into the movie to see it's charms and clever animation (scenery etc) It took me several views of the movie to fully take in the intricate details of rock-forms/clouds etc etc that are inserted throughout the movie...everytime I watched it I would find another subliminal car themed piece of animation genious

I'm quite surprised that you Americans arent taken by the story too....its really about the "forgotten towns" that are by-passed these days....hmmm something that little ol' New Zealand has on a very small scale but nowhere near as interesting as the U.S.A seems to be (not from experience sadly)

I was holding onto all hope that this title would get a 3D re-render...and now the news is good, I just hope that Pixar dont drop the ball and give us all a great depth-filled feature....

There's really no "post conversion" when it comes to computer animated movies. Since everything is built in a computer anyway, the opportunity is always there to convert to 3D a lot easier than it is to convert 2D or live action. Given that everything is already placed on a 3D plane, it's MUCH less effort to put it through the actual 3D conversion process.

Shrek 1~3 was post converted to 3D.

I stand corrected. I was under the impression that these CG conversions went back to the original assets and then re-rendered them as 3D. It seems that while Dreamworks did provide some assets to that post conversion company, it was still significantly done using the final render.

I suppose that in a computer animated movie, it's POSSIBLE to re-render everything, but not necessarily a given. At least that option is available for those movies, where it's not capable at all for live action movies.

Thanks for the education, hazelwu.

Per Wikipedia 2D to 3D Conversion - Re-rendering of computer animated films:
Quote:
Computer animated 2D films made with 3D models can be re-rendered in stereoscopic 3D by adding a second virtual camera if the original data is still available. This is technically not a conversion and therefore such re-rendered films have the same quality as films originally produced in stereoscopic 3D. Examples for this technique include the re-release of Toy Story and Toy Story 2. Revisiting the original computer data for the two films took four months, as well as an additional six months to add the 3-D.[2] However, not all CGI films are re-rendered for the 3D re-release because of the costs, time required, lack of skilled resources or missing computer data as with Shrek 1-3.[3]

You and I both...even though I don't have a 3D TV (yet), I like to have the editions with all the bells and whistles...

I doubt it. They can't possibly have the original cells in the sense they could convert it the way Lion King, BatB, and the Little Mermaid were. It is too old of a film. They could do a straight up 2D-3D conversion, but they layered the cells and reshot the films for the others (using the original CAPS). At least, that is what I remember reading somewhere.

Wasn't a huge fan of this Pixar film, somehow lost the original release so I may pick this up anyways, just to keep up to date n my Disney/Pixar 3D releases.

I don't like that they used the old cover again. Seems so old now

I see myself quadruple dipping.

I'll get this mainly to keep up with my Disney/Pixar 3D collection, wasn't one of the better Pixar films.

I noticed something
Last Year Finding Nemo came out in 3D, in October
Monsters Inc. in February
and now Cars in October again.

I think they're doing a biannual thing like they are doing with the Diamond Editions, except not for a limited time.

Hey it's just a theory

If they can do it with Wizard of Oz, they can do it with Sleeping Beauty

Also I'm not ensuring it but I can see it happening.

The only part of Little Mermaid animated in CAPS was the ending... the rest of that 3D version is a straight up 2D-3D conversion.

The possibility of other traditionally-animated Disney films being converted is there, but there's a much higher chance that newer films (made in CAPS) like Aladdin will see a 3D release in the next few years.

Nope, Disney has already publicly stated that Little Mermaid 3D is the last of their 2D-3D of their traditional animation.
