Apparently it only works for 40GB models.

But is this a Sony recommended routine procedure?

Looks more like something they would use to "stress test" the fan in factory QA tests, probably not something I'd use to clear out the dust, stick with a vacum if you're that concerned.

damn thing was loud!!as long as your ps3 is out in the open you dont have to worry about it.just use swiffer to dust it and maybe a vacuum for those extra dust on the vents

I wish my 60gb had that feature. I don't even know how I should clean my fan. I'm hesistant to use canned air to blow into the vent since it seems like it would just blow the dust further in.

If the fan wasnt meant to spin at that speed im sure it would have a limiter. Btw i dont think you can clean your fan without opening it. Look at the pics online. Ive never seen a fast spining fan get cleaner. Your just adding dust to the blades.

There is new video online somewhere (just google it) that show how to do it for the 60gb version. You basically just turn the ps3 vertically upside down and hold it there then turn it on and wait for about 15 seconds and it will clean it out. Dust came out of mine and it it running quieter now. To be safe i would do this on a cool ps3 rather than onet hat has been running.

The 40GB "fan test" seems to be intentional. The 60GB "fan test" seems to be tricking the system into thinking it is overheating (which it may very well be doing). I'll wait until someone figures out the magic code to get it do to it by itself.

I wish I could open my system up and blow the dust off the inside like I do to my computer every once in a while, but if I do that, my warently would be void.... Sucks

I have found using compressed air through the vents in the front of the system blows the dust out the back just fine.
