Default Riddick: Furya

Quote:
The box office numbers for Chronicles of Riddick were disappointing to both Universal and the film's creator and star. With Riddick, which Diesel and Twohy view as a stand-alone feature, they hope to get the franchise back on track. Said Twohy, "At its core [Riddick] is a survival story about one man, and his only way to get off this planet is to call in the mercenaries for a ride. That said, we don’t turn our backs on the mythology that we planted in the last movie, and we are actually bringing Karl [Urban] back for a few days of filming
to advance it and lay the groundwork for movie four. We’re concerned with paying off the loyal fans and think that if somebody doesn’t understand something the solution is to look at the other two movies and get up to speed. It does play in a gratifying way as a standalone movie, but there are threads that we continue to sew that we started in previous movies and will continue in future movies."

In terms of where the franchise heads next, Vin Diesel adds, "You’ve got to go to the Underverse. It’s expected, it’s something I firmly believe. You’ll have to go through the Underverse to get to Furya. So, those are the two further stories that are mapped out. The Underverse is a much more costly venture. We went this direction, trying to do an R-rated movie, which is cool and even more interesting because it’s so unexpected. But yes, you will be at the Underverse and you will be at Furya sooner or later." Riddick will arrive in US theaters on September 6.

Box office has become so unpredictable this year but i dunno how the 4th will get a greenlight . If kick-ass 2 couldn't bring people to see it I dont know how this could/

I actually enjoyed Chronicles very much, and was extremely disappointed to see they abandoned all that to go back to what looks like a remake of the first one.

I am glad to hear they aren't completely ignoring Chronicles and plan to return to that mythology in the future, thought I fear they'll all be pretty low-budget from here on out.

Low budget is not always a bad thing, I was one of those people that didn't like Chronicles of Riddick.

Shouldn't they wait and see how much it'll make when it hits theaters first before they decide to make a 4th one?

I'm okay with more Riddick.

Riddick Vs The Expendables on Furya.

Considering this one only cost around $38 million, it should recoup it's budget pretty easily.

My thoughts exactly. Sadly it's not looking good for low-budget sequels to fan-favourites, green-lit with the assumption that finding a viewership after the cinema will turn into better returns for the sequel. As many have said, sadly Kick-Ass 2's result makes Dredd 2 even less likely to happen now as well.

Same but Chronicles simply didn't make enough money to justify a big follow-up. I'd much rather they scale back and produce another Riddick film at all than not produce anything. Fingers crossed, despite my cynicism above, that this will pave the way for more mythology in the follow-ups (I feel Chronicles just went too far, too soon after Pitch Black). I'm very pleased that they got Urban back for a couple of days, that's great news.

If this one can do, at bare minimum, what the second film did, $115 million worldwide, than this one will be just fine. That would be just under triple it's budget. The second did pretty well worldwide, and Diesel is becoming even more popular in other countries with the 'Fast and Furious' franchise. I'm really not too worried about the third, or the fourth after. People seem excited for it.

I dont think anyone is expecting this one to do more than $35 - $40 million here domestically but yeah, international receipts will probably be this film s only chance of generating yet another sequel.

Yeah, I dont see this doing huge business. It'll open in the high teens or 20's and end around 50 I think. But I agree, hopefully with international it can justify further installments.

...but I could be wrong. Diesel does have a HUGE FB following, and urban audiences like him and they really turn out sometimes.

I think Diesel's star power has never been higher

We'll see soon enough if any of it will pan out though for Riddick 3

Yeah, I'm glad as well that they'll reference the events in Chronicles in some way. The trailer for Riddick made it look like they were ignoring Chronicles entirely. I'm just worried that this movie might be a total retread of Pitch Black with the creatures attacking at night, etc. Being a big Battlestar Galactica fan, I am glad to see Katee Sackhoff back in a sci-fi movie.

I can't wait for this. I'm one of the oddballs who actually liked Chronicles of Riddick. I even thought it was better than Pitch Black.

Maybe because Kick Ass is terrible? But then again, there are terrible films out there that make lots of money, like the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean.

Anyway, I love Riddick and I hope they keep making these films.

I haven't seen the third one yet, but I loved what they did with the second one. Instead of rehashing the story from Pitch Black, they moved in a different direction, exploring the universe in which Riddick lives. I thought that was a brave move and I hope they continue that trend in the upcoming films!

The biggest selling point of #3 for me is Sackhoff, not Diesel. She's the main reason I am interested.
