![]() ![]() Amazon Pre-Order On July 1st, 2011, Montreux hosted the reunion of two master guitarists, Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin, with their Invitation To Illumination concert. Both musicians have been regulars at Montreux across the years but this was the first time they headlined their own concert together. The show features most of the tracks from their classic 1973 album Love Devotion Surrender mixed in with a wealth of other material. The evening was a showcase of supreme musical virtuosity and spirituality and typified the approach of these two great artists. It is certainly a performance not to be missed. Line-Up: Carlos Santana (Lead Guitar & Vocals); John McLaughlin (Lead Guitar & Vocals); Cindy Blackman Santana (Drums); Dennis Chambers (Drums); David K. Mathews (Keyboards); Tommy Anthony (Guitar & Vocals); Raul Rekow (Congas, Percussion & Vocals); Etienne M'Bappé (Bass); Benny Rietveld (Bass); Tony Lindsay (Vocals); Andy Vargas (Vocals) Track Listing: 01. Echoes of Angels/Introductions 02. The Life Divine 03. Medley: Peace on Earth/A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall/Stairway to Heaven/Our Prayer/SOCC 04. Right Off 05. Vuelta Abajo 06. Vashkar 07. The Creator Has a Master Plan 08. Naima 09. Lotus Land Op. 47, No. 1 10. Downstairs 11. Venus/Upper Egypt 12. Let Us Go Into the House of the Lord 13. Black Satin 14. Cindy Blackman Santana Drum Solo 15. A Love Supreme 16. Shake It Up and Go I've been waiting two years for this one. This article tells all about what must have been a killer gig. I'm a big fan of McLaughlin and Santana's fusion period, and Love Devotion Surrender is definitely a favorite of mine. Last edited by flyonthewall2983; 05-26-2014 at 11:57 PM. |

I'm about to fire up my HT room right now and give it a spin. John Mclaughlin is one of my absolute favorite guitarists and Carlos ain't too bad either. ![]() ![]() |

My quick review:
Performance: The concert started off a bit too "jam-band" unrehearsed and sloppy for me, but it got much tighter musically while ironically getting looser, performance wise, in a very good way. ![]() Video: For 1080i/60p it was very detailed with almost no comb filtering. Quite bright overall with decent black levels. Some flatness and lack of depth from the bright blue and red lighting, like many concerts. Audio: Very balanced with some really punchy, deep bass and some actual discrete performance sounds in the surrounds, although it's mostly just guitar or snare drum effects panning around the room. It wasn't quite as solid overall as I expected, with John Mcglaughlin being involved, but it was very enjoyable, and got much better as it went. ![]() |

My copy arrived yesterday. Looks and sounds fantastic. John and Carlos burn it up all the way through. I was surprised to learn that Cindy Blackman Santana (probably best known as Lenny Kravitz's drummer) was a student of Tony Williams. She did a pretty stellar job, especially on the two Lifetime tracks she was a part of with John on it.
Between this and Carlos reuniting with much of his old band, I'm glad to see him getting back to doing more out-there stuff again. |
