Default Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind 2

Quote:
Since 1986, Studio Ghibli has been in the business of providing original animated features that have grown into modern classics, though a sequel film or franchise has yet to appear on their production slate. Writer-director Hayao Miyazaki, who has had a creative hand in well over half of the studio’s productions, recently suggested that this might change in the near future for one particular film. Though Miyazaki technically wrote and directed Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind just before Studio Ghibli was formed, he’s apparently open to a sequel of the beloved adaptation. The real kicker here is that he wouldn’t be directing it; that honor would fall to Neon Genesis Evangelion director, Hideaki Anno. Hit the jump for more.

While promoting the upcoming film, The Wind Rises, Miyazaki appeared on a Japanese talk show in which he hinted at the possibility of a Nausicaä sequel (via Rocket News 24). Miyazai and Anno have a long history that actually goes back to the 1984 film. Then an animation artist, Anno reportedly impressed Miyazaki so much that the director trusted him with animating some of the film’s more complex sequences. Not only did this experience kick open the door for Anno’s career, it led to a long-burning desire to revisit Nausicaä for a sequel, which makes sense considering the first film only adapted approximately two of the manga’s seven volumes.

Here’s what Miyazaki had to say about the potential film, followed by his full interview on the show (in Japanese only, for the moment):

“I have no interest in doing a sequel to Nausicaa,” Miyazaki said on Osama no Brunch. “But these days I think if Anno really wants to do it, he should.”

Nausicaa is one of my favorite Miyazakis (and Anime in general) ever ... and I love Anno's work on Evangelion ... but man...

I really don't know if Nausicaa needs a sequel frankly :/

Interesting. I knew right away that Miyazaki wouldn't do it, since he has never really been open to making a sequel. But if he gave his seal of approval for Anno to do it, then I am definitely interested. Love Nausicaa, and the world could definitely be open for some more to be explored with it.

The first movie only told a fraction of the story written in the manga, there's plenty of room for expansion There's probably enough for a TV series even. Anno was a key illustrator for the first movie so it is in good hands if he decides to make a sequel.

I think the title is a little misleading (or not as informative as it should be) since nothing is confirmed at all. Miyazaki simply is giving his blessing to Anno.

With Anno's continued relationship with Miyazaki of voicing the main character in Miyazaki's latest film, and his obvious love for the work with producing the short "A Giant Warrior Descends on Tokyo" which uses a Giant Warrior from Nausicaa, I think this sequel can definitely be a possibility.

I still somehow don't see this happening... But if it does happen, I'd rather he start over and adapt the manga into a film series or something, rather than making a straight-up sequel to Miyazaki's film.

For people wanting to read the manga:

I bought this complete collection in English earlier this year, but haven't read it yet. A really nice set and the pages are much larger than regular manga books and hardcover. (15.2 x 25.4 cm)

You can get it at Amazon.

I've heard that the movie is just the first 16 of the manga's 58 chapters, so the material for a sequel is already there.

I own it too. It's a steal at the price it sells for. It could easily sell for double the price their asking for

A Nausicaa movie series/"trilogy" based off the Manga would be epic...and rated R/MA... Manga absolutely trumps the movie, and I'd love to see it animated. The animated movie is also a mix up of different things from throughout the manga...not just a straight forward use of the first few volumes, so it would be hard to directly continue on with part 2 from the original movie.

Have both the 7 volume Japanese boxed set and the older American 7 volume set (used). Both are equally good in the inking art quality, with the Japanese release seeming more brown. The poster/map quality between the two is a HUGE difference though...US release poster quality in each volume is no where near the vibrant color found in the Japanese release...US release posters look like they've been sitting out in the sun for a decade or two in comparison.

Japanese box set:

Although somehow, I don't think "Hey, if he wants to, let him, I should worry... " is any ironclad indication that a project IS in the works...

I need to read the manga. I though the film was pretty good. Not my favorite of Miyazaki's works, but something I do not mind owning.

I liked the Miyazaki film, but it truly did feel like a small chunk of a much-larger narrative (I need to read the manga). I'd be up for a sequel.

Sequel(s?) or a new full adaptation closer to the manga, I'll take either.

My copy of the hardcover manga box set should be coming in within the next few days. I also own the film as it's apart of my 32-Disc Studio Ghibli DVD box set. I bought it recently and I've only seen Disc 31 so far, which is a FANTASTIC 2hr live concert with Joe Hisaishi at Budokan. That single disc was worth the cost alone, at least to me. But I digress.
This question is for those that have done both: Should I watch the film first or read the manga? Which medium do you think would have the maximum impact on first-time viewers?
I'd like to hear some opinions on this.
