This is very surprising, I have been holding back on buying the current releases because they were sub-par maybe this release will change that.

I only paid £3 for the original Anchor Bay release, so I wouldn't mind splashing out on a brand new transfer.

Yes please. Arrow are killing it at the minute. They're seriously on par with Criterion at the moment in regards to artwork, content and quality. With MOC and Arrow, the UK are looking good for future release of classic cinema!

Hopefully now with this and Time Bandits from Handmade Films it means that Arrow will also restore and release Long Good Friday and Mona Lisa. I held off Long Good Friday as all reviews of the old versions of that said they were crap.

Good job I held off on the steelbook. Looks like a last attempt by Studio Canal to milk some money out of it before it goes OOP.

I just hope this has the extras from the Anchor Bay release. Otherwise I'll have to keep hold of it. And yes, The Long Good Friday should be next.

I thought with Time Bandits there were difficulty licensing the AB extras hence they created their own, although some of the AB ones were licensed themselves from Criterion.

Agree Studio Canal have probably clubbed together all their remaining stock of Withnail and shuvved in the Zavvi steelbooks to shift them. Don't want to do what AB ended doing of dumping their OOP Handmade Film BD in HMV for a couple of quid a go.

There's a few Arrow titles (listed below) apart from this one which don't have release dates yet, so whenever the next announcement is due, I expect this and some of those to get confirmed:

5 Dolls For An August Moon
Mark Of The Devil
The Masque Of The Red Death
Nightmare City
Stray Cat Rock

It's certainly coming out this year.

And I hear from its producer that the transfer looks stunning - it's another James White restoration from the original negative, so if you were happy with Time Bandits (his last HandMade effort), it's unlikely that you'll be disappointed with this. Especially since we believe that no release of Withnail & I has really done it true justice - even Criterion released a lacklustre non-anamorphic DVD.

Few updates from James White:

"Currently grading our new WITHNAIL & I restoration w the film's Director of Photography Peter Hannan and it's looking STUNNING."

https://twitter.com/jamesfilmresto/s...83051439886337

"Those who have only seen WITHNAIL & I via the old Blu-ray, DVD, TV, etc are going to be in for a shock at just how good this film looks"

I'm sure it'll be great but wouldn't have been better for them to do a 4K scan? Release as 1080p now and re-release with little extra work in 4K in 5 years (or sooner)?
