There was a theatrical format called "Smell-O-Vision" that was used for Mike Todd's film, "Scent of Mystery" in 1960 (although probably only for the roadshow presentations), which was also shot in 70mm. They would release odors into the theatre, but in 1960, smoking was still permitted in movie theaters, so you probably couldn't smell the odors over the cigarette smoke. The 1981 John Waters movie "Polyester" had a gimmick called "Odorama", where viewers could smell what they saw on screen through scratch and sniff cards. |
