Default August: Osage County (2013)

Quote:
AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY tells the dark, hilarious and deeply touching story of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose lives have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Midwest house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them. Letts’ play made its Broadway debut in December 2007 after premiering at Chicago’s legendary Steppenwolf Theatre earlier that year. It continued with a successful international run.
Release Date: December 25, 2013
Directed By: John Wells
Written By: Tracy Letts

Quote:
The movie adaptation of “August: Osage County” received a rare 10 minute standing ovation last night at Roy Thomson Hall. The film of Tracey Letts’ Pulitzer Prize winning play stars Meryl Streep as Violet, matriarch a volatile Oklahoma family. The ovation was like something from the Cannes film festival, not usually seen in restrained Canada, and was very disarming for everyone in the cast who was in attendance including Julia Roberts
I know, every time Streep is in a movie people say “Oscar.” But the three time Oscar winner weaves some kind of magic in this movie. You can see it from the moment she appears in half light, looking haggard with spiky short hair to when she pulls on a full, dark wig to play Violet, the pill popping cancer patient with loads of secrets. And yes, this is a comedy and a drama.

I'm probably going to skip this one, unless it is really something special, I can't help but feel this is not something for me (at least not in cinemas)

The headline title seems fairly misleading when you look at the reviews so far: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/august_osage_county/

I am interested in the film though. Looks good. Great cast.

I love that trailer! Meryl looks to be great. And Edward Sharpe's 'Man on Fire' only sells me more. Completely in for this one.

Well I liked it. Streep was over the top, but isn't that her MO these days anyways? The audience reaction was extremely positive. I saw it at the 2nd screening at TiFF with none of the cast present so that says a lot about the reaction being genuine. It's about the best ensemble cast of the year, with everyone doing good to great, but all working perfectly off each other during the group scenes. Wait til you see the extemely long dinner table scene. The comedic timing and sharp one liners are something else.

I just can't stand Julianne Nicholson in anything though. Never liked her, never will. So many better actresses they could have chosen for that role. I doubt many will talk about Juliette Lewis (she doesn't have the size role as the others) but I thought she was hilarious.

I usually rebel against the over hyped Oscar stuff, but this is based on a Tracy Letts play and I can't deny that I enjoyed this one.

I had to look her up after reading your post because I've never heard of her. Now that I looked her up... I still have no idea who she is. LOL

She was unbearable and annoying on the last season of Ally McBeal and I went "ugh" when she showed up on Boardwalk Empire.

This looks so good. Meryl and Julia look like they quite literally give their best performances of their careers based on the trailers alone.

It's been my most anticipated film of the year and the fact that I get to see this in roughly 25 days makes me so happy.

I thought Nicholson was good on Boardwalk.

Anyways, thanks for your impressions and I'm glad to see it was positive. I hope this is wide on Christmas, it will likely be our Christmas movie.

Got to see this tonight. I'm a fan of the play, and I thought the movie was great. I'm sad that so much was cut, but hopefully we'll get some deleted scenes on the Blu-ray.

they cut the damn movie again - the pre-release 'festival' cut I saw ran at 130 minutes - from what I can tell the new running time is 121 minutes... wtf? only 9 minutes but come on... from what I've been reading the ending has been problematic.
