I'm prebooking for sell thru for stores and I saw this:
Release Date - 7/1/2008 Batman: The Movie (DVD) - Cost - $5.35 ($9.99 SRP) Batman: The Movie (Blu-ray) - Cost - $26.77 ($39.99 SRP) Could Fox be anymore delusional? I know this movie released in 1966.....but what were they thinking with that price point difference? Is the Blu-ray disc gold plated or something? |

Examples like this, is why I personally know a LOT of movie buffs who won't make the switch to Blu Ray...yet. A $20 premium is simply not worth it, when they could buy 4 additional films for the price of that 1 blu ray.
I bought the original batman film from the 60's from the walmart bin for $5 a year or so ago. I'll never own it on Blu unless I buy it for the same price, and can't find anything else to get instead. ~Camper |

I order for mutiple rental locations but I don't own them (lets just say it's a big franchise). The Blu-ray rental section in a lot of stores I order for is 200+ titles. Fox has got to be in a race to get the biggest margins possible on every release.....it's the only way to explain their pricing.

I just ignore all of Fox's older titles (with the exception of something like Independence day) because they have priced themselves out of the Blu-ray market (which is funny in itself because the Blu-ray software is so expensive....to be the worst is truely something to be ashamed of) |

I think this is just Fox's logic thinking that blu-ray is a niche and those that want it will pay the premium. A sd-dvd pricing always reflects on what its worth. Its as almost they are punishing people for wanting high def. I could never understand why some cable providers charged extra for high def box vs standard box.

I think people have to realize that is just Fox's general policy with home video releases before the market has matured. It was the same way with dvd. This title will be showing up in the Wal-Mart Blu-ray Bins within two to three years for around $5. The same exact thing happened when this title was released on dvd.

Sooner than later Fox will have to drop their prices once the other studios get going with their releases and the competition for our dollars tightens up. With Universal entering the game finally and Paramount to join the party at some point, there is only so much money we can spend.

this really is pretty delusional. how hardcore a batman TOS fan does one have to be to be willing to pay this kind of premium?

The prices that Fox is charging for catalog titles are outrageous. I have posted on that before and I will continue to post in the future about it. I might pay their premium on a new release that I have never viewed before. However, I will not pay $30 for a catalog title, unless they provide the kind of value found in Blade Runner or Close Encounters.

Thanks for yet another refreshing look at Blu-ray from the inside, BluOgre.
I wonder if Fox is even aware of the resistance to their pricing structure; perhaps they just don't care, and figure that since the market is small, they might as well gouge the early adopters who are desperate for HD. I can't wait for Paramount and Universal to jump in - the more content providers there are, the more competition there will be for consumer dollars, and the more pressure there will be for Fox to come back down from the stratosphere on at least their catalog releases. |

I agree, I would've gotten ID4, Commando, and Predator by now if it wasn't for their prices. They're really making it impossible to justify the purchase, especially with other studios coming out with catalog titles with not only better prices, but better transfers as well (The Rock, 6th Day, Crimson Tide, jtnaf).
I wounder when Fox will wake up and smell the sales that other studios are probably enjoying. It has a duel effect too; the more reasonable prices for Blu-ray are, the easier it will be for consumers to justify the upgrade. Most people aren't in love with movies enough to spend $29 on one, but $19-20 is certainly a nice price point. |

well they did that for 4 years with DVD... and since the Blu-ray market will grow slower (because not everyone have a HDTV and not everyone care are PQ). Fox MSRP with DVD always been higher, but when the DVD was established good enought, they dropped the price...
Btw, this DVD have been released like 4 times on DVD already, they can't charge full MSRP.. |

Wow, that's a steep price to pay. Not sure anybody else will pay that much. Soon Fox will get the hint, lower prices or else we won't buy.
