You have this listed on OP as open matte, but if you are cropping 4:3 to 16:9 then some bits from the top or bottom are being lost, so it is a reduction?

It wasn't cropped. The original show was shot in 16:9 and then cropped to 4:3 for its TV airings since virtually everyone owned 4:3 displays. So for the BD it was opened back up to its original 16:9 ratio.

Are the BD 1.78 episodes cropped the same as the HDTV 1.78 episodes?

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1367390/th...ason-1-blu-ray

The screenshots in the thread above appear to show 1.33 broadcasts having more information top to bottom, while the 1.78 HDTV episodes show more left to right while missing small strips top and bottom.
I am sure there was a sliver lost on the top and bottom, but I believe the switch from 1.33:1 to 1.78:1 was something approved by the producers of the show.

Rambo (Rambo IV), Sweden/Finland/Iceland: 1.78:1 (full 16:9) instead of OAR 2.35:1. It's a TV master with 1080i/25fps even.

Does The Avengers qualify here? 1.85 for theatrical release. Open matted to 1.78 for Blu-ray.

Weren't the digital 3D presentations 1.78?

If you read earlier in the thread, a few scan lines difference doesn't make it non-OAR.

Actually, 1.78 for The Avengers is OAR because that's how it was shot. I guess it doesn't belong here.

TRON: Legacy was actually altered from 1.43.1 to 1.78:1 for the IMAX sequences. The 2.39:1 sequences were shot in 35mm.

You're absolutely right.

Here's another suggestion, if you're still interested in updating this list. The Shining was changed from 1.85 to 1.78. Not sure if it was an open matte or a crop.

Many members here told me that noting a change from 1.85:1 to 1.78:1 was not worth it so I stopped updating it. Once you take those out there's actually very few that are altered.

If you are still updating the post with large changes,

Cursed (Echo Bridge) - 2.39:1 to 1.78:1
Darkness (Echo Bridge) - 2.39:1 to 1.78:1
Venom - 2.39:1 to 1.78:1

Cursed is cropped (despite having an open matte version available elsewhere), & Darkness was not. It's 2.42:1 according to it's entry, and you can check that out with the attached screenshots. Venom is open matte.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Darkness-Blu-ray/44824/

Planet Terror (Unrated) - 2.39:1 to 1.78:1 (Director approved)

It's worth noting that this movie's original theatrical presentation was actually a two movie event, and that presentation is available in it's OAR on blu-ray. Basically, since the 1.78:1 blu-ray is director approved, then that should be considered the OAR for the movie by itself as there was no preceding theatrical presentation of it (ie this movie has only been released on home media, and the bluray presentation is director approved). And since Grindhouse (the two movie event) is available in 2.35:1 there is no real reason to list "Planet Terror", imo.

Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (US, CA) - 2.39:1 to 1.78:1 (Open matte)

The CA release for this is actually 2.35:1, and the US is the only version that is open matter as far as I know.

Annnd, a new title

Body Bags (US) - 1.33:1 to 1.78:1 (Cropped, sides expanded)

Stuck In Love has a drastic change. Theatrically it was exhibited at 2.35:1 and appears on Blu-ray in 1.78:1.

Body Bags was shot with the knowledge that the movie would be shown theatrically overseas. So it technically is OAR. Shout/Scream doesn't seem like the type of company that would alter an aspect ratio like that.

Body Bags was meant to be a television series, in the early 90's, so technically the OAR would be 1.33:1. Not to mention an overseas theatrical distribution was never a lock and as far as I can tell never happened. They talk about the framing in the commentary and its along the lines of "we protected it for a widescreen framing" for the just in case scenario; this has nothing to do with its OAR.

And I'm not sure whose master Scream used but they certainly don't make their own. Also, for the record, the audio on this specific title has a rather noticeable hissing sibilance issue that was overlooked so this title was hardly a priority for whoever remastered it. It's simply a case of them using what they were given.

Can anyone confirm 100% that this BD is actually in the wrong aspect ratio, as it shows on this site?

The German version is listed as being Region A compatible, comes in its OAR, and contains both audio & subtitle tracks (German & English) available on the Canadian one.

Oh, and according to imdb the movie was shot on Super 35 so there is a possibility the image will just be opened up and nothing will be cropped away. Not exactly the correct ratio or presentation, but it doesn't necessarily mean you're losing video if you have your heart set on the Canadian version.
