I haven't seen this movie in widescreen since I saw it in theaters in 1996 and so this will be great to see this film finally in it's OAR after all these years.

It would definitely be screwed up and a major kick in the balls if Sony decides to release this in Full Frame again even on Bluray, we assume it's in 2.39:1 aspect ratio but they really haven't confirmed whether its widescreen or not

Wait a minute, Matilda was actually released in theaters? For a long time, I was the under impression the movie was simply made for home video. That means all this time I've been watching the butchered version and not in its true OAR.

Yeah...it's a film directed by and co-starring Danny DeVito, of one of the more famous children's novels. I saw it in theaters. Does it not have the standard "modified to fit your screen" label on either the packaging or before the movie?

I do not understand Sony. They won't release Christine or Oliver but they release this? Not to mention releasing Ishtar and not Tootsie. Bad Boys II was on the early Blu ray promo trailers and still has not seen the light of day.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Matilda will always be twice or triple the movie Bad Boys II will ever be, despite the fact they are totally different genres. Im glad its getting its recognition over nonsense action sequels that are just noise.

This is one of the crowning achievements of hollywood. I can't wait to show this movie to my kids when I have them.

Man, it's been so many years since I last saw it on home video, so I wouldn't know. Besides, I was a kid (6 to 7 at that) and I'm not going to have any recollection about the label before the film starts.

Oh, well, your other post had sort of an "all this time!" tone to it...I figured you'd seen it more recently than that.

Yeah, they really need to use the yellow cover art. The E.T.-esque cover is just awful.

Whatever gave you that impression?

The fact I never recalled seeing commercials advertising the movie as child, and my exposure to the film was through video promos in another film. I'd just assumed it was DTV release instead of an actual theatrical film.

Matilda makes sense, because it's a kids/family friendly type of movie. They'll probably sell a bunch of copies since it's being released right before the holidays. That being said, I have no idea why Sony would rather release Ishtar while they're still sitting on Bad Boys II, Tootsie, Ghostbusters II, Panic Room, The Big Chill, etc...

This is true. There is nothing been confirmed as of right now, so there is nothing really stopping Sony from them re-releasing the Full Screen again if they choose to do so though I hope they don't do this. I would be so disappointed if we got the 4:3 format again for the Blu-ray.

Not sure if it adds to anything but the iTunes HD release of Matilda has the original 2:39:1 ratio, so I'm pretty confident they will keep it like that for the Blu-ray release.

I think what it is, is that Matilda's original DVD release was Fullscreen since it was released during the VHS days and just chose Fullscreen since it was a children's movie. Then Sony makes a re-release later on but probably just using the same transfer with no Widesceen option available.

So could say this will be the 1st time it's released on a physical format in it's OAR goodness.

I'm not sure about the UK version but the AU/NZ DVD release had the original 2:39:1 ratio also.

+1

I hate that cover art so much. I don't know what possessed them to want them an E.T. theme look for Matilda, but it isn't working. On the plus side, it is a work in progress so I doubt that this will be the final work that we will see on the Blu-ray.
