Spain The Killing and Paths of Glory

Might be handy for those wanting to add to their HD Kubrick collections but are locked to region B:

The Killing: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-K...Blu-ray/85419/

Paths of Glory: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Paths...Blu-ray/85418/

Hopefully these titles will feature decent quality ports of the Criterion transfers (like the Spanish disc of The Lady Vanishes), even if they will probably be feature-only. In any case, when both are in stock I shall order them and post my findings here. (By the way, there are Aussie Region B versions of these films which mostly replicate the Criterion sets, but are quite expensive to import to the UK).

If you want to see the Australian entries, you can click on the movie's title at the top of the BD entries (Spanish, or any entry) and it takes you to the movie's theatrical database entry, where you can see other countries' editions listed of the movie.

Thanks. I couldn't resist and ordered both The Killing and Paths of Glory from amazon.es.... Now I'm really hoping they live up to Criterion standards in regards to PQ.

I'm beginning to think I wasted my money on these releases. Haven't watched Paths yet, but The Killing has some serious issues. The review from Criterion states:

Quote:
The only possible issue here is the presence of light chroma noise during certain scenes. However, I was only able to spot its presence after I took the screencaptures for our review, not while viewing the film.
Here on the spanish disc, I see horrible greenish-reddish hues on several scenes. I wonder if it is the same problem, made worse by a different encoding.

Sounds glitchy to me. There should be no green/red hues anywhere

So I should try the disc on another player to see if it's a compatibility issue?

edit: it's very prominent at min. 00:25 on Marie Windsor's face.

Paths of Glory seems fine on the othr hand.

What is the aspect ratio of Paths of Glory on the spanish blu-ray?

The Criterion is 1,66 :1
My old dvd is 1,33 :1

On blu-ray.com the spanish version is said to be 1,78 : 1.
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Paths...Blu-ray/85418/
Is this true?

Also, I would like to know if it is possible to watch this spanish blu-ray WITHOUT spanish subtitles.

Anyone know what these releases are like? I am in Barcelona and saw these, High Noon, Duck You Sucker and Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcea and want to buy them... Thanks!

I would avoid those titles (and others from those "companies"). They're likely illegal transfers of the Criterion (or Kino, Olive...) blu rays
