DD hasn't released a Blu-ray in almost 2 1/2 years, and their last release of anything (some DVD-only Shaw titles that aren't even mentioned on their website) was a year and a half ago. It's pretty safe to write them off at this point. I'm not sure if the their Come Drink with Me DVD is still in print, but even if the rights are available, who's going to pick them up? Well Go, Image and Media Blasters all seem to have abandoned their own Shaw/Celestial lines. An HK release is the only realistic hope for an English-subbed version.

A review from a poster at the Criterion Forums. PQ sounds great, but the only audio option is a Cantonese remix—no Mandarin tracks at all, which is kind of a problem considering this is, y'know, a Mandarin film. At least we know there's a good transfer available, if any other distributors want to take this on (I'm not holding my breath).
The poster also reviews Heroes of the East, which has mono tracks in both Mandarin and Cantonese but with spottier PQ. |

Makes sense. Amazon only gives the uphelpful description "Chinese," but Paramount Japan specifies Mandarin. The OP's cover image is pretty low-res, but it appears to say that on the back of the packaging as well.

Would love to see this in HD. DD's DVD looks lovely but the subtitles are terrible, and the Celestial DVD is non anamorphic.

Just bought Come drink with me Japanese BD. Looks quite good, true HD and PCM mono audio. Nice release although I have to customize it and add subtitles.
What other true HD Shaw titles there are? Japanese, HK, Taiwan, South Korea? To what I understand the HK ones are almost all upscales (expect Bruce Lee films, 36th chamber trilogy). How about these Japanese Paramount releases? |

All the Japanese Shaw releases are sourced from HD masters if I'm not completely wrong. I can't think of any that isn't. I might be able to check specific titles if you want.
There's also a Polish release of 14 Amazons and quite a few German releases utilizing HD masters. Last edited by p_cqvist; 09-25-2015 at 07:22 PM. |
