Default why would DENON "cheat on" its customers?

I was utterly surprised to discover that the brand new receiver I had gotten from denon avr 1908 was NOT the model 1908 I was hoping to get.

When I opened the box and examine things before connection to my speakers, something seemed different from the instruction I had downloaded and gotten used to beforehand. It didn't matter much after the setup everything sounded just right, but then while putting things together I came across something I thought would be a mistake(silly me to think such thing would be my fault). Through one of the settings for the Hdmi I noticed the resolutions from 480i,p 561i,p(not sure) and finally 1080i and 720p...and no more.

I did some search and discovered the problem. Apparently there would be 2 models 1908!!! while the manuals I received with the receiver resemble the actual machine I noticed that the instruction manual I had downloaded from denon and which stated USA in the picture of the connectors in the back was different in the back side.

I said it didn't matter such difference, after all Denon a serious company nevermind releasing 2 models with the same number would be careful enough to give them the same issues. NO!!! Apparently the one I got would be a non usa model and would not be able to cover the 1080p hdmi ability for my set without any full hd video let alone the hd audio, for which I was trying to update my setup in the first place.

Does anyone know of this situation? is this normal in the world of technology and services? If so, what are we, the cheated customers, supposed to do?

Please help, I still have some sort of hope I was the one screwing some setting up or is this receiver lost to 1080p?

See you(cyber) spac E-folks...

what place did you order this non-usa model from?

EDIT: As far as a company producing two models with different features but using the same model number, it isnt rare when each model was aimed at a different territory. The only way someone may end up getting the incorrect version would be online and probaly bought it because the price seemed way cheaper than other websites only to find out there was a reason behind it.

maybe I didnt understant the post correctly...but without actually looking at the manual, if you have an option under the HDMI settings for resolution this to me makes me think its for the Analog to Digital conversion process and does not have to do with the actual HDMI resolution, which would be 1080p.

I guess im just confused to the actual problem being asked?

denon models avr588 avr688 avr788 only pass video through hdmi
models avr888 and avr988 upscale hdmi and pass both audio and video very clear on their website

Sounds like you didn't do the research before your purchase. Not Denon's fault...

Please tell us where you ordered this from so that we can avoid them.

I'm looking at the Yamaha RX-V1800 and some places on the net have it for as low as $845.00 and I saw a "new" one on ebay for $777.00 and I'm totally affraid that if I get one for that price (which is normally $1400.00) The directions might be in French or Japanese and the voltages will be all off.

Who knows??

I think I'm going to go with an in between price like 9 and just have some piece of mind.

Yeah..but please post the origin site/ store of this unit.

Thanks, good luck with the exchange process and better luck next time.

true that my buddy told he he'd set me up with a killer set up. the speakers are amazing but the receiver on the other hand was sub par. I did not do any research. that was the last time I will blind buy a piece of equipment.

I believe you bought an Asian model. Even if you did buy an US model, this receiver wouldn't upscale to FULL HD (1080p). It can only Pass Through. Yours can do the same.

For HD Audio, it's clearly mentioned on Denon's site that AVR-1908 will not process any HD Audio (DTS-HD MA or DTS True HD). It can only process Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic IIxDTS-ES, DTS 96/24, DTS Neo:6, DTS. So I don't know how you got the idea of HD Audio on this receiver.

The good news is, your PS3 can upscale to FULL HD (1080p) and your AVR can pass through that signal to your TV. Do that and you'll get 1080p.

HD Audio decoded in the PS3 sent as Multichannel PCM.

Agreed... But I'm not sure whether the AVR-1908 is capable of receiving Multichannel PCM.

Well I had done some search before purchasing this set. It does have multi channel pcm through Hdmi. now that the ps3 got DTS HD support I realized there was no excuse to delay the receiver update. That's why after going from yamaha to kendwood, (never liked pioner, sony or the like- no offence intended) I decided to go for Denon.

I must admit this set IS STUNNING - sound is just as crisp clear as it gets, but the reason I bought it was to have both 1080p(in the future of course, right now my set is 1080i) and the HD audio.

My complaint was about the possibility of not being able to update to a 1080p tv due to the limitations on this receiver; however, I've been hearing this answers that this set DOES pass through the 1080p signal AND "decodes" the multichannel from my ps3. I need to check that. If that is the case, I would owe and apology to Denon, not only for misunderstanding this set, but also for the "little extra" that would UPconversion from analog sources would be.

thanks for the replays, if someone out there has got the same set I'd appreciate your feedback on your experience with this set.

almost forgot, i ordered the set from a friend's catalog...I'll look into it as to where it was shipped from.

See you(cyber) spac E-folks...

Denon HDMI Specification chart:

AVR-1908

Multichannel PCM 24bit/192kHz Audio Max Channels Supported = 7.1

the 1908 is the lowest model that supports PCM audio, the 1708 & 1508 do not.
