I imagine with much of the film taking place in a cg environment, a large percentage is rendered, which might account for a favorable presentation (despite this being technically a conversion).

I absolutely have to see this film.

Well, I went to the screening last night.

And

It's ONE OF THE BEST 3D movies to date. Not only the 3D but the movie itself is amazing. I have watched many space movies but never like this. Not where you feel like you are in space. Kudos to the director. Now I need to follow his movies. As for 3D, amazing. I would rank it my top 5 3D movies of all time.

Must see 3D movie !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why can't more movies be like this? Where 3D is part of the story and not a gimmicky?
I have been looking forward to own this movie in 3D.

I hope its full screen as thats the only way to get the immersion in space movies (like Hubble 3D).

Im seeing it today! I just had a look at the local cinema runs and realised this had started. Very excited to see how they use 3D here.

Hopefully it's medium to strong 3D. Will check it out this week. Thanks.

Thanks Sookymonster.

Considering how tough it can be to create stronger 3D in high contrast scenery, as with outer space or with the world of Tron Legacy, it's nice to hear this, as too often the stereographer will play it safe for good reason as the current technology can't fully block out all light in the eye that is supposed to be completely black, and ghosting occurs with strong 3D scenes, whether it be ghosted images of the astronaut or the stars in space. Not an easy task.

Looking forward to it.

Thumbs up

Saw this today in 3D. The movie was amazing. Very intense and the 3D was very well done. I found myself dodging space debris as it was (seemed to) shot out of the screen at you. The 3D didn't make the movie, but it definitely added that extra punch to the drama of the movie. I would rank the 3D behind Avatar but in front of Life of Pi and The Avengers.

On a different note I really enjoyed the long shots. There were times where the director used the rotation of the space objects and the earth to have a very long scene where there was a break in the action but allowed you to transition mentally without a break in the film. There was one scene that lasted for 8 or more minutes without a cut in the film allowing you to really drink in the action on the screen. Both me and my girlfriend noticed this and really enjoyed the lengthened cuts of the film.

My only complaint was that it was short at 90 minutes or so. At the end you really feel like you got off a roller coaster and your begging for more.

Definitely going to consider picking this up in 3D. Spectacular movie!

Saw this in IMAX 3d and the movie in my mind is a masterpiece! Just stunning and awe inspiring and the 3d is icing on the cake (I thought the depth levels were excellent and very consistent and the movie has everything a 3d fan could ask for. My screening was a little less than ideal and enjoyable tough because I had a weird light filtering issue with my glasses and it actually made my head hurt a bit. I think the problem was I got a bad all the way at the top and bad glasses lol)!!!!

3D movie of the year, hands down. It's this year's Avatar, this year's Hugo, tie year's Life of Pi... It's definitely set a new standard and shown just how effective 3D can be for storytelling. And it looks really damn good too.

After seeing both Gravity 3D and watching the Space Junk 3D IMAX BD 3D at home, the reality of the dangers of the lethal debris in space really sets in. A scary future for satellites and future space flights. A human-created asteroid-belt flooding the Earth's atmosphere.

Additional images for debris in earth's space.

Yeah, I was thinking about that documentary "Space Junk Imax 3D" during the movie and how good they timed it.

I liked the 3D, especially when the debris was flying out of the screen many times over during that one exciting scene with the
[Show spoiler]fire explosion on the space station
, which was my favorite scene in the movie.

I will go against the grain and say that while the 3D inside the interiors was on the stronger side, the exterior shots, for good reason, were medium ranged 3D (reason being the high contrast images are not friendly when it comes to modern 3D tech's ghosting limits, being unable to block out all light).

Since much of the movie took place in outerspace, I'd say Gravity 3D is mostly medium 3D, with stronger 3D interior shots, and awesome pop outs during action scenes.
3D hybrid conversion of the year for me is still Pacific Rim.

Marvin the Martian (from looney tunes) was flying out and only then did I notice any ghosting effect because of the high contrast image in stronger 3D.

The movie was interesting, though I wish Clooney had control as the
[Show spoiler] lead, as Sandra Bullock was more prone to being clumsy, not cool under pressure and ready to give up. Instead they let Clooney give up so Bullock could live, when he could have pulled the line, climbed onto her suit, and grabbed the rope holding her foot, saving them both. Instead, he just detached and gave up. That was the only real disappointment in the movie other than Bullock saying she'd save him and it was nothing more than an afterthought when the pressure was on for her.

Even so, a very unique space movie that gives respect to 3D, so it's a good thing.

[Show spoiler]i was a little peeved too that they got rid of kowalski when it looked like the rope was strong enough to stay stuck to her foot long enough for him to climb back to her. On the bright side I think it gave a chance for her character to grow and her action scenes were truly awesome (again the space station explosion inside the satellite was one of the highlights I honestly though have never seen fire behave in zero gravity though, which took me by surprise lol)

Exactly. Kowalski had to die for Bullock's character story to cover her leaning to let go and live. Which she had not done since her daughter's death.

Great movie, great use of 3D, but the actual 2D-3D conversion's technical quality was surprisingly poor. Prime Focus had been doing some pretty solid work lately, but this was more reminiscent of Immortals than The Wizard of Oz or World War Z. Most of the movie was pure CGI, so that wasn't often an issue, but when Bullock was out of her space suit she was usually quite warpy and icky and unconvincing. That long shot of her in the airlock, while a powerful image, has one of the least convincing conversions of a human body I've ever seen outside of just leaving it flat - and there it is, in the center of the screen for an extended period of time, floating around like a misshapen lump of clay. They kind of dropped the ball in a lot of places.

Still, the 3D really adds to the experience and it should totally be seen in the format; preferably in IMAX or any of those many IMAX knock-offs.

For the naysayers that are always declaring the death of 3D, WB is reporting that a whopping 80% of all tickets sold this weekend were for the 3D version. It pulled in $55.6 million, setting a new record for an October release (prior champ: $52.5 million for "Paranormal Activity 3" in 2011).

I know folks around here don't place a lot of weight on Rotten Tomatoes, but its worth noting that Gravity has a 98% rating from critics and is pulling in 90% from viewers. With praise from all sides it will be interesting to see where this one ends up.

There was a long close-up shot of her inside one of the stations and her face looked quite odd to me - it seemed misshapen somehow. It was the only time I really noticed anything unusual. Overall I thought the conversion was very impressive, though Pacific Rim was better in my opinion. Pacific Rim was flat-out amazing. This was excellent but I guess it had an issue or two since I noticed one and you noticed a few too. Still an outstanding job I feel. This is very precise work and it's a miracle they can do it at all - turning a 2D film into believable 3D is quite a feat when you think about it.

Agreed. People clearly chose the 3D version for this film. I'm sure some will try to argue that "they weren't playing any 2D screenings where I live, so I had no choice but to go 3D", and that may be true in some areas perhaps, but in my local area (which is certainly not near any big cities), all the cinemas within driving range were playing it in both 2D and 3D.
