OMG!!

it's taken 7 years, but we finally have our first blu-ray of the Orson Welles classic--on which my screen name is based-- on the way.
so excited!!!

coming October 8th.
no info on possible region coding.
(hopefully a Criterion upgrade is on the way in NA; that box set has 3 versions of the film)

Based on data provided here, it's the 98' version only. Progressive video enconding and DD mono and 5.1 audio. Extras: trailer, still gallery.

Well it is the Confidential Report cut for sure.
Looks ok, an HD version of the Criterion DVD (most likely from the same master).
Sound is vanilla...English DD mono + Italian fake 5.1 and mono.

Strangely it includes a trailer for Citizen Kane

Would have thought that a trailer for Arkadin would have been in order.

Hello, long-time lurker here.

I just saw Carlotta's French BD of Mr. Arkadin, which was (strangely) being sold early in the Cinematheque Francais despite the July 8th release date. There was another copy if any Welles fan in Paris is interested.

In any case, I can pretty surely say that the French disc is completely superior to this Italian one. The same restored master of the Confidential Report cut is used; it's relatively clean with excellent grain retention. More detail can be seen not only due to a superior bitrate but also because the Italian BD slightly crushed the blacks. The icing on the cake is the lossless English audio, which trumps the Italian's lossy DD.

For those curious, the file size of the main movie is 27 GB.

On a final note, does anyone think the aspect ratio may actually be 1:66? The movie was made in 1954, and the shots seem to be a bit too perfect in a wider ratio.

Comparing the caps that are exact match from your French disc and the Italian one, they look like the same master. Italian one has a darker contrast so it's harder to notice some finer detail but otherwise look very similar.

Again, the French BD with a superior bitrate and better contrast trumps the Italian BD despite using the same master.
