Default Terminator and Terminator 2 PQ

Did anyone else feel the PQ on this BD was not very good for a Blu-Ray HD disc?

it wasnt bad I thought....just use the THX video optimizer on the disk...it helps to bring the colors alive for the movie

Heard this was another title that didn't "transfer" too good.

Here's something I wrote about the Terminator 2: Judgement Day disc: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...2754#post62754

In summary I think it looks very good on the daytime and studio shot scenes, but the image was blurred to hide the grain in the high film-speed (ASA) shot night scenes. <-- But I see that happening in other titles too,
so I guess the modus operandi for some colorists is: mantain the grain constant by lowering the sharpness of the transfer in grainy-stock shots.

Instead of what it should be which is: mantain the sharpness constant throughout the film even if that makes grainy-stock shots, well um, grainy, which is what high definition and additional resolution and sharpness is all about: seeing all that there is on the negative.

Deci Note to colorists: If I wanted the image blurred to hide the grain and polished to oblivion, I could have bought the DVD ya know. It does that automatically.

In any case Terminator 2: Judgement Day BD is the best version I've seen of this movie on video (see shot of Sarah Connor on the desert bench looking at the Terminator before she dreams, for example) and it would be all good, if those night shots didn't look.. "smooth".

I'm happy with the disc of the theatrical, while we get T2

On my new HD the picture did not fill up the entire screen. It had about 2" off the top. Did you have the problem?

Forresttheman , that's because T2 was shot in the widescreen Scope format ratio of 2.40 wide and HDTVs are just 1.78 wide. I recommend you to go to the aspect ratio/black bars sticky hub, and read throughroughly all the threads linked in it (with example pics) or any website about widescreen formats.

Since you're new to all this, also make sure your HDTV is set up (adjusted or calibrated) as closely as possible to standards. This can have a great effect in the perception of High Def material (for example, for regular video one tends to have the sharpness setting very high to compensate for the low resolutions, for High Def it should be closer to the flat position, etc; correct black levels give depth to the image, etc.) The THX Optimizer on the T2 BD is a start. (Although it leads to one of the nighttime softened scenes i talked about!) The last pattern of it (the ones with the grey bars and color bars and sharpness resolution lines in the bottom) is the one I use the most there. (And I set the black level darker than the THX instructions recommend, btw)

If you have any more questions just shoot, as I'll be back.

I'm happy with it....look at other movies around the same time period (or after for that matter) one that comes to mind "Under Seige" looks worse than T2.

I gave T2 a "Good" but not "Great" rating.

T2 looks fantastic, but I've T1 isn't too great as the original it was transfered from wasn't the highest quality. Haven't seen it yet myself, but I will rent it at some point.

Got them both. T1 is slightly fussy. But for such an old movie I have no complaints.

T2 looks great as I expected.

I just got T2. It looks really good, especially consideiring its age (can you belive it's been 16 years?). Not nearly as pristine as Pirates, but a definite step above DVD. On a side note, it's amazing how well this film still stands up today. Aside from the fact that Judgement Day came and went, it could still have been made two years ago, MOST effects and all.

I agree, i am still impressed with T1 as i have never seen it looking that good before. I am pretty sure it was a b movie anyway or they refer to it as that in the extras. But i own both and i am happy with them.

T2 was first blu-ray i bought. I thought some scenes looked TERRIBLE, especially the first bar scene where arnold walks in naked, i thought it was my TV which i just bought and so freaked out thinking my TV was junk. The rest of the movie was ok, but several scenes were iffy, but that first bar scene was not good. it was smokey but should have transferred much better. looked like standard television.
