Default ID4 one scene in particular

If Aliens blowing stuff up is a "spoiler" then sorry to awaken you from under your rock.....

The scene, after Will Smith and the other pilots take their fighter planes to attack one of the main ships the first time, and the ship releases little fighter ships of its own......

When they attack the planes that are still on the ground, and people are running etc.... the explosions are SO RIDICULOUS looking. I haven't compared this to the DVD version, but do the small explosions look as CGI/Fake as they do on the blu-ray version at this point in the movie? The rest (from what I saw, I didn't see the whole thing last night) looked really good, and this part wasn't "bad" just really cheesy..... I think the HD affect actually hurt the movie by exposing the fake-ness of it!

If I remember correctly, the effects in that shot are rather bad even on DVD. I think bad effects are just bad effects, blu-ray probably makes it more clear, but they are still bad on the SDVD.

Well, since BD has a higher definition, that fakeness is going to look a lot more clear.

There were and still are a ton of bad effects in ID4. I remember them talking about trying to fix some for the DVD release but really they seem to never have.

Mind I don't care to much as I think the movie is still a great popcorn event. I watch it every 4th of July and at least now it's in HD.

You bring up a really good point and something I think needs to be cleared up for me. I am under the impression that some of the older movies that used heavy CGI will not translate well into blu-ray because of the effects being masked. So either we get soft looking transfers or do they need to redo most of the effects in high resolution to get them to look not so transparent in 1080p? Even if you watch the Phantom Menace some of those scenes upconverted look like junk. Complete junk and Lucas made that movie look really soft too.

I think most effects have been done in HD and rendered down for DVD. After all the effects had to look good on a huge theater as well. HD resolutions have been around on computer monitors for a very long time. I am not really sure though I am interested to know more about older CGI in movies as well. I am sure some CGI replacement might need to happen.

That would explain why the new Star Wars Trilogy looks ridiculously and blatantly fake when watching it on an up-converting DVD player or PS3.

Look... That is nothing... I mean absolutely nothing. Look at it this way, in the climax of the movie the big saucer (I mean BIG... many many miles across) is attacked by jet fighters. These fighters are carrying conventional HE missiles against a multi-million ton vessel from another world. I don't know the yield of a sidewinder etc... but it's a few KG at most. Stroll on!!! Picking on this one scene is rather like saying Nero dropped a note when Rome burned!!!

It's a popcorn movie... disengage higher brain functions and enjoy!!!
