I see that multiple versions are out in other countries, yet nothing here in the US. Does anybody know who currently has the rights to this classic epic in the States? I know that the film is a favorite of Martin Scorsese and the DVD looked pretty good, but from I gather those current Blu-ray versions are from the same, less than perfect source, as that of the DVD?
I guess from a print standpoint, are there no prints of this large format film that could be sourced to work on a serious restore. There was talk sometime back that perhaps Criterion might have it hands in this, but I think it was just wishful thinking. It's just one of those sweeping epics that deserves the same treatment as we have seen with the Ten Commandments and Ben Hur. |

As there is no imminent release of El Cid in the U.S. on blu-ray, I picked this up from Amazon Japan for about $16 shipped...
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/El-Cid-Blu-ray/99208/ ...it's Region A with English audio and removable Japanese subtitles. The transfer is (I believe) the same old one has been released elsewhere; it needs some clean-up. But if you want a Region A copy of this on blu, it's not bad. |
