WHAT!!! 7.2!?!?!

I just did a ton of rewiring and design to accomodate 7.1 with one subwoofer. So now I need the jacks for TWO subwoofers!!! This is madness!

OP and Pro-B, please don't get a Sony! They do not have a great reputation with sound equipment. In the past, their electrical supplies have been dirty and drop substantially with all channels driven. If you really must have a Sony, then get one from the ES line as those bench test far better than the average Sony reciever.

You don't have to use 2 subs, but it does give you the option of using 2 with the 2 LFE outputs on the back.

Are the two subwoofers supposed to be placed front and back? The same signal is sent to both then? if so, it's just a gimmick.

same signal..... now as far as placement, it depends on the room.... as far as "gimmick" I don't think so, but I do think 99.9% of the people here can accomplish the desired effect with one good quality sub.

I ordered the Onkyo 605 last night: http://www.ecost.com/Detail.aspx?edp=38607351

It's on sale for $259.99 plus $30 shipping, so $290 total. I was debating between this one and the Sony, but I ended up going with this one after finding out that the Sony STR-DG720 has push plugs but no banana plugs, on the back. Also, the Onkyo 605 decodes TrueHD and DTS-HD onboard, which wouldn't necessarily be as useful now, but it definitely would if I got a standalone.

EDIT: It's refurbished but comes with a one-year warranty from Onkyo (parts and labor).

Default Decoding hi-res audio in your receiver

I kind of like Pioneer, Sony and Yamaha. I want it to be able to decode all available audio that BD is currently offering.

Thanks.
Since you have a PS3, don't choose your receiver based on what audio formats it decodes. You'll be doing the decoding in your PS3 anyway, and passing the PCM signal to your receiver. The PS3 can't bitstream the audio, so the most you'll get if you let your receiver decode it is DTS (standard not DTS-HD MA) quality, or stereo (not 5.1/7.1) sound.

That being said, I have 3 Pioneers and am very happy w/them. I have an Elite 92 that I bought in December. It sounds and looks great, has all the features I want, and it decodes all the formats. Of course, since I have a PS3, the receiver never 'gets to' decode anyway...

If you can, listen to the top 2 or 3 models you're considering thru the same speakers you have or will buy. Each manufacturer has their own unique sound, and the same receiver can sound different thru different brands of speakers.

Here's an article that may help: http://www.finishabasement.com/home_...a_receiver.htm.

Despite the temptation of saving money, I didn't buy my Elite 92 online because all the store seemed to have an 'all sales final' policy. If there's something wrong w/the receiver, you're stuck dealing with the manufacturer. The last thing I wanted was to have to send a brand new receiver in for service because someone at FedEx, etc. dropped the carton, or an elephant sat on it, whatever.

I'd be careful with refurbished too- especially if the place gets bad reviews.

Nothing wrong with refurb equip as long as you get a warranty. I bought the Onkyo 605 from 6ave.com last week when they had it for 299.00, no sales tax, free shipping. It is now back up to like 379.00 I think. Haven't had time to hook it up yet, but after talking to everyone on here that sounded like the best bang for the buck. I am only going to run 5.1 for now and may add 2 more speakers in the future.

Yup. I could see how the warranty would definitely give you peace of mind. I've always wondered what exactly they do to refurb? Are these returned/defective units that they replace parts for/combine to make a working unit?
