PlayStation Sees Changes

“I can foresee a face saving price cut,” said Pidgeon, suggesting that the 60GB version could be lowered to the $499 price point, while a model with an even larger drive is introduced in the $599 price point. “This would let Sony make a price cut without making a retreat.”

Price drop to $500: Good.

Introducing another $600 model: Bad.

That would keep them in the exact same position they are now to average joe. Don't offer a $600 model if you cut the price damnit...

I would like to see a Elite PS3 with 200GB hard drive with 1080P/24 support for around $599-$699.

I don't see anything wrong with offering another higher priced model if they decided to cut the current price of the 60 GB model. The 60 GB is still a hellva deal for $500 and Sony will sell them like hotcakes during the holiday season.

Face saving?

And if Microsoft does a similar move with the Xbox 360 Elite price this year, will that be face saving in light of the Wii? I bet not.

I would think just lowering the price isn't making a "retreat". Make a price drop around Christmas time and leave it. People know what's up with a price drop-the company wants to sell their product. Usually people don't care and will buy it at the lower price. If they did it around Christmas then people would assume this and snatch them up. Like I said-lowering a price point isn't a "retreat"-it may be regrouping or whatever but every company does it.

I think the whole 80 GB talk was them sandbagging it..

200 GB is such a nice round number for 600..

Ok, maybe the PS3 isn't the cheapest, but over here in Euroland, we had (and still have) to pay 599 Euro ( about 750 us dollar???).
And what about our PS3 loving friends in the UK, they were recordholders in the most costly PS3's in the world. And still they bought it.

I want the prices of the discs to go down, especially Fox, but that's another thread.

For anybody who thinks that the HDD is the real price differential has got to be uneducated. Swapping 20GB to 60GB is simply a wise decision making, since maintaining a 20GB SKU is more expensive then swapping it with a 60GB.

Yeah its' the constant characterizations levelled against one company and not against the other one.

Sony is clearly aware of the market dynamics from the previous rounds..and while M$ is also - Sony have been reducing/consolidating the electronics on their console at a pace a marketing company like M$ simply can't match. The only way they will be able to match prices is by DUMPING and that will get them into all sorts of problems. The Elite is a defensive (not offensive) face-saving move in recognition of that and that Sony got it right to start with. Although it is offensive in other ways

I think there may be two PS3 SKU's this holiday season. A 60(80?) GB version that will be priced to flumox both the 20GB premium and the 120GB "Elite" and a 160-200GB version to take the rest of the market. The only difference will be the HDD for production efficiency. I think what they learned with the 20GB is that it wasn't the HDD size but the other features in the 60GB that drove the sales to the 60GB. I think two SKU's again makes sense because it allows them to neutralize/play with pricing issues without affecting the early adopter perceptions.

I also think they should have and still should install YDL by default although I don't think they will. Maybe something they could/should do on the "160GB" version only depending on the price differential/value proposition.

To counter I think M$ will bundle every accessory they have.

I'd love to see a $499 60 gig PS3 at Christmas time and maybe a no more than $599 120 gig PS3 as a bonus complement.

This is the only thing I would love to see on the PS3. Now is this possible with firmware to allow 1080p/24 in addition to the standard 1080p/60? Also maybe throw in 720p for good measure for watching Blu-ray movies.
