Default PS3 Does Not Play DVDR Very Well

I have some old video that I sent away and had transferred to DVDs. When I play them in my PS2 and DVD player they play perfectly. However, when I play them on my PS3 there are blurry squares that show occasionally.

Is the PS3 doing something that is causing this like trying to upscale or something?

Is there a setting on the PS3 that I can change so that this doesn't happen?

Has anyone else encountered this?

I've never had a problem playing cd-rs or dvd-rs on the PS3. Are you connected via HDMI? A bad HDMI connection could produce something like what you say, though it's just a guess on my part.

As I write this, my PS-3 is playing a DVD-R just fine.

Thanks for the feedback. I have tried adjusting all of the settings on the PS3 and nothing helps. I have other DVDRs that play just fine so my guess is that the problem is with the disc not the PS3.

It is interesting though that it plays fine on my PS2 and DVD player. Maybe it is because the PS3 is a more powerful machine and so it is able to show flaws that the other machines can't pick up.

If you are connected by an HDMI cable to your display, then yes you are upscaling (unless you turn this off) and it could introduce artifacts like you described.

Also keep in mind that different brands of DVD-R may produce different results. The blocks could be the PS3 having a difficult time reading the disc (although I have never experienced this on any of my dvd-rs)

I tried all the different settings on my PS3 and could not get it to play any better so I figured it must be the disc itself. I went back to the company that created the disc for me and they told me that they recorded it in DVD-R and that it may be that the blu-ray players do not play them very well. They said that they could try DVD+R to see if that fixes the problem. However, they said if I wait a couple of months that they would be able to do blu-rays for me. I am going to wait for the blu-rays.

I really appreciate everyone's help on this.
