Overview: Brian De Palma’s inspired rock’n’roll fusion of Faust, The Phantom of the Opera and The Picture of Dorian Gray boasts an Oscar-nominated score by Paul Williams, who also stars as an evil record producer who not only steals the work of composer/performer Winslow Leach (William Finley) but gets him locked up in Sing Sing - and that’s not the worst that happens to him along the way.

Few revenge scenarios have ever been so amply justified, but the film is also constantly aware of the satirical possibilities offered by the 1970s music industry, exemplified by Gerrit Graham’s hilariously camp glam-rock star. Jessica Harper (Suspiria) appears in her first major role as the naïve but ambitious singer, on whom Winslow secretly dotes.

Prodigiously inventive both musically and visually, this is one of De Palma’s most entertaining romps, not least because it was so clearly a labour of love.

Just saw the listing for this, very exciting!

Saw this in the theatre when I was a kid and still enjoy it quite a bit.

Have high hopes Arrow does a kick-ass job on this one.

Oh, there must be a ton of extra material out there; if only from all those Phantompalooza fan conventions they have in Canada every year.

I doubt we'll get a commentary from De Palma, and sadly no chance from William Finley (RIP), but Paul Williams is still up and about, so perhaps...

Come on, Arrow, gives us the late-Valentine's Day present we all want!

If you have seen Tommy or The Rocky Horror Picture Show and liked either of those i would imagine you would like Phantom. Another film i can highly recommend of this genre is Hedwig and the Angry Inch, it has a fantastic score, i don't think it's available on blu yet though.

i love hedwig I have that on dvd and the soundtrack....i dont mind Rocky horror picture show.

Also, Paul Williams wrote all the music, so if you like any of his songs, it's a sure bet. "We've Only Just Begun," "Evergreen," and "Rainbow Connection" are a few popular examples, and he also did the music for Bugsy Malone.
