Flicking through Amazon for a couple of titles I'm likely to get in the future ("Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special" and "The Hobbit: Extended Edition") and I note that both of them only have 2 releases, one with DVD only and one with 3D Blu-ray and Blu-ray. Both seem to forego a separate Blu-ray only release.
Now, I understand the reasoning, as it means less releases cluttering the shelves for a single film/show, but as someone who frankly hates 3D and would very much like to not support it in any way where possible, it's really annoying that if I want the Blu-ray edition of these titles, I HAVE to get the 3D blu-ray too, I have no other choice. Does it affect me personally much? Not really, I guess, but The Hobbit has that crass "3D!!!!!" on the cover and the additional disc that I cannot use is just a waste. Has anyone else noticed this trend, or am I late to the party to even bring it up? |

I don't think it's a bad thing with the Doctor Who or The Hobbit release as they're reasonably priced it's when they put all the extras with the 3D release like Prometheus and charge extra it gets on my nerves. Or the 3D release gets a new transfer like Jurassic Park and the rest of us are stuck with an old master!
Generally speaking if you have a separate release on 3D you can sell it for about £10 on Ebay to recoup most of the initial cost. |
