is it possible to play blu ray on a non hdtv.

Yes, it should be possible but it would be rather pointless as the video will be down converted to standard definition and look the same as a standard DVD. There's really no reason to get Blu-ray until you've at least got an HDTV to view the content in high definition.

I suspect that it may look better than standard DVD. Not by much but there may be a noticeable improvement even on a SD TV.

And, looking at the future, it may be more interesting to buy your movies on Blu-ray Disc, because of the HD...

If you can't afford a HDTV, (32" hdtv's can be bought for less than a grand these days), you probably won't be able to afford the initial Blu-Ray players or software. Better to wait until the cost of hardware falls and more titles are available.
