Many will bemoan it but I think TT are going to be the label to beat on quality catalogue releases in 2014. Hoping for lots of MGM goodness.
![]() I can handle the prices. I just dread that one day I won't be sat by my computer on pre-order day and I'll miss out. |

Surely (and especially as a UK resident) Arrow simply slipped your mind? Quality restorations, extensive extras, reversible cover art, and thick, detailed booklets, plus heavily discounted initial pre-orders. TT can't compete in any of those departments except perhaps transfer quality, but Arrow already completely schooled them head-to-head on The Fury.

The Long Goodbye is shaping up to be a fantastic release, and from what I'm hearing The Killers will be just as carefully and comprehensively presented. Last edited by John Hodson; 10-26-2013 at 08:29 PM. |

It's really too bad Best Buy discontinued their Insignia line - for $50, you could buy a player that could easily be made region-free with the remote. Most of the time, the 'Configure Region' option pops up without me even having to do anything.

This would be great news if true. The Train is a really unique WWII piece that avoids completely the usual Hollywood fluff-treatment of the period. The acting is superb at every level (this is my favorite Burt Lancaster role), the overall authenticity of every aspect of the production is a wonder and a delight, and the themes are magnificent~ valor, commitment, and selflessness in the pursuit of protecting the essence of civilization from destructive barbarity. The many action sequences are notable for their impact and realism and underline the intellectual backruptcy of cartoonish CGI effects. The audio and visual range of the production is exceptional and will test any system out there. The steam locomotive sequences in particular are dramatic and powerful, especially when an armored military train is wheeled out of the train sheds. And the black-and-white picture itself is glorious, even on the old 1999 DVD. Tweaked in blu-ray it could be on a level of the best of the B&W productions that have recently come out!
This is a film that Rossellini could have produced and one that Criterion could proudly have released to have gone along with Army of Shadows among others. If it is in fact released I'd sincerely hope that they'd scrap the art work posted earlier which does the film a great disservice. The DVD cover would be much more appropriate. ![]() |

Arrow didn't slip my mind at all, thanks. I have most of their discs and I'm delighted that they're doing THE LONG GOODBYE, THE KILLERS and SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS.
But when I say quality releases, I'm talking about the films themselves. Largely what Arrow are doing is very good editions of films which, imo, aren't particularly good. I have a nostalgia for the likes of SQUIRM and THE FURY and even LIFEFORCE but, imo, they're not very good films. I appreciate the female derriere as much as any heterosexual man but I'll still take a lot of convincing that Tinto Brass is an overlooked genius. So Arrow make really nice discs - nice extras, very good transfers (I agree THE FURY blows TT's edition away) - but the film is the thing. TT has access to films from Fox, Sony and - most especially - it's got about 50 MGM films, many of which are true classics. And in 2014 they're going to up their release rate to 6 a month. On this basis alone, Arrow is going to have a hard time keeping up. And anyway, their remit is different - outside of Arrow Academy, their focus is primarily cult films. I've no idea if HELL COMES TO FROGTOWN is good or not but I can't help but be more stoked for the likes of THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES or LOVE AND DEATH or CUTTER'S WAY etc (not that I know they'll be released - just hoping!) But hey, I would be DELIGHTED if Arrow had access to the same films - why would I not? I wouldn't have to import, I wouldn't have to pay TT's prices, they will be better packages all round and there's no risk of missing out. But that isn't likely to happen and it's on that basis - rather than a love of TT - that I made my comments. I will continue to buy virtually everything that Arrow releases and I wholeheartedly agree that they're doing a grand job. Oh, and I haven't forgotten about Criterion either. |

One of my favorite Franenheimer films. The man is one of the great unsung masters of American cinema.
The HD clips of this in the doc about him on the French Connection 2 BD look gorgeous, can't wait to see the whole movie that way. |
