Wonderful film, I just had the pleasure of viewing it at work in the morning before it gets busy. I received the dvd from netflix (they didn't have the blu sadly.) Lovely shots with a fine atmosphere. The whole thing just drips of class. Cathy Rosier is just breathtaking to me and one has to love the Paris Metro. That club made for some great atmohsphere too, was it a real club or set up for the film? Was it the greatest film I have ever seen? Not by a long shot. Stylish as hell, yessir.

I fail to understand what makes NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD so popular. I just don't get the whole flesh-eating zombie thing. It grew old with me long before DAWN OF THE DEAD, ,but to each his own. I had to go look up LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD. I've never heard of it even though the sixties is my favorite decade of film. Anyway, if any one cares, this is my top twenty list in chronological (year-of-release) order: THE APARTMENT SPARTACUS ONE, TWO, THREE BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S LAWRENCE OF ARABIA LOLITA TOM JONES THE GREAT ESCAPE DR. STRANGELOVE MY FAIR LADY DARLING DOCTOR ZHIVAGO ALFIE THE PROFESSIONALS THE GRADUATE PLANET OF THE APES 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY ROSEMARY'S BABY THE WILD BUNCH EASY RIDER A very conventional list, I'm afraid, and it doesn't list most of my personal favorites, but rather what I consider the more important/influential/popular titles. For instance, ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS is one of my favorite movies, but include it in the top twenty of the sixties?!!! Can't do it. Also, I think PETULIA is a great movie, but it's kind of forgotten by most today. EASY RIDER really does very little for me, but I can't deny its importance, and I'd rather watch TRUE GRIT over THE WILD BUNCH any day, but I'd never argue the former is a more important movie than the latter. For this and other reasons, I really think lists are kind of dumb because it's all so debatable, even within myself. And why no PSYCHO in my list? I can't deny its popularity and influence, and it is one of my personal favorites, but sometimes I think a movie can be too popular for its own good, and I really hate how the workings of serial killers, even if they're fictional, is presented as entertainment. I really don't think there's anything entertaining about killing people. PSYCHO is good as an excercise in pop psychology and great film craftsmanship, but it's about as deep as a puddle, and it sure didn't do Anthony Perkins any favors for the rest of his life. PLANET OF THE APES is my all-time favorite film, and its popularity is greater today than it was in all of 1968/69, but I still think 2001 is a better film even though I believe it bores more people than it now wows. It's a very respectable list - a nice mix of classic American and European films. It serves as a timely reminder that in amongst all the slavering fanboys, OCD packaging freaks, bores and ranters that so often clog up this site, there is a large core of intelligent but unpretentious movie-lovers here.
If I can count myself amongst that number, I'd like to propose that we take the site back from the barbarian hordes! ![]() |
