![]() ![]() Dusty is back in Disneytoon Studios’ all new high-flying adventure “Planes: Fire & Rescue,” landing in theaters on July 18, 2014. Disneytoon Studios’ “Planes: Fire & Rescue” landed on stage at the D23 Expo, welcoming Dane Cook, the voice of Dusty in “Disney’s Planes,” the action comedy adventure that landed in theaters today. Cook, *****turns to voice the character in the follow-up, joined director Bobs Gannaway (“Secret of the Wings”) on stage. Julie Bowen was announced as the voice of Lil’ Dipper, and fans were treated to story details for “Planes: Fire & Rescue,” plus character images, concept art and footage from the film. “Planes: Fire & Rescue” features a quirky crew of elite firefighting aircraft devoted to protecting historic Piston Peak National Park from a raging wildfire. When world famous air racer Dusty (voice of Cook) learns that his engine is damaged and he may never race again, he must shift gears and is launched into the world of wildfire air attack. Dusty joins forces with veteran fire and rescue helicopter Blade Ranger and his courageous air attack team, including spirited super scooper Lil’ Dipper (voice of Bowen), heavy-lift helicopter Windlifter, ex-military transport Cabbie and a lively bunch of brave all-terrain vehicles known as The Smokejumpers. Together, the fearless team battles a massive wildfire, and Dusty learns what it takes to become a true hero. Wow - They realy are confident about this series, no? And a whole other approach than we are used from Disney. Only 11 months from now the sequel will hit theatres. ![]() Last edited by esteban²; 08-10-2013 at 09:19 AM. |

At this moment "Planes" is still running in theatres in some countries. (for example, came out two weeks ago in Belgium) It already made $ 207 M. If you keep in mind the production budget was only $ 50 M ... Well, Disney was right to be confident about this.

Absolutely. And I saw Planes, and it was pretty terrible, but I still would find it ridiculous if they didn't keep pumping them out. Pretty smart business to keep making movies that earn over 200 million off a 50 budget, if you ask me. |

You mean the same new lows they sunk to in the 90s when they were making DTV sequels to almost all their films? Yeah, that's what I thought. People like to look at Disney through rose tinted glasses sometimes, but they've been doing the same things for years. They know they can make money this way, so it's not surprising they're making more of them. It sells to kids, and if they enjoy it, so what? In the end, that's what matters. We may not love it, but I met quite a few kids who not only dig the 'Cars' films, but enjoyed 'Planes' as well. That just sort of is what it is. We don't have to understand it or like it, but if kids are digging it, then they did their job.

This is really not much different than Disney cranking out the Tinkerbell movies, except these are hitting theaters, and not direct to video.
I heard the first Planes movie was actually not that bad. Will have to check it out at some point. |

My kid loved Planes, we will be buying it on blu ray, and we have toys of it. I agree Walt, I don't understand the Disney bashing with films like this. It's smart business. People forget that's what they are, a business, and anything that will make 4 times it's production budget AND sell merchandise off of, they will continue to pump it out until it stops bringing in money. |

![]() There are poeple on forums like this, usually in their late teens or twenties, who get annoyed and pissy because Disney - Pixar, too - do things that are aimed at kids that those posters might not enjoy. It's a bizarre, selfish filter that you find a lot in threads like these (or, say, the Cars sequel threads) |

I'm fine with them releasing sequels like this as long as it is separated from their main division. Keep the high quality ones separate. Let the kids enjoy these and make money off them. As long as they keep releasing high quality releases for their main division, I'm satisfied. Last edited by animefan77; 10-28-2013 at 07:52 PM. |

That led to Jungle Book 2 getting a school-vacation upgrade. And then two other Pooh spinoffs. And then--yes--even Michael Eisner started to say, look, some of these don't deserve to be in theaters, because they're making the ones that do look bad. I'm not putting Planes 1 on the list. On the contrary, it was smart of Disney to start realizing the potential of a little unobtrusive August Back-to-School Cleanup offering, before Smurfs 2 got there first. But does that mean I want to see "Tinkerbell: the Pirate Fairy" get a full-release upgrade, just because "Secret of the Wings" got a week at the El Capitan for Oscar qualification? No, I just thought Planes wasn't all that bad. Best to keep these things in moderation, before smelling a "trend"--Sticking a foot in the door causes problems when you start trying to jam your head and arm in the door, too. |
