United Kingdom The Umbrellas of Cherbourg: 50th Anniversary Edition

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg Blu-ray REVIEW

NEWS
https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=12556

Quote:
StudioCanal has revealed that it plans to bring to Blu-ray acclaimed director Jacques Demy's romantic musical Les Parapluies de Cherbourg a.k.a The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964), starring Catherine Deneuve, Nino Castelnuovo, Marc Michel, and Anne Vernon. The release will be available for purchase in the United Kingdom on February 10th.

A story of lost love, with all the dialogue sung rather than spoken. In the French seaside town of Cherbourg, Genevieve (Catherine Deneuve, in her first screen role) discovers that she is pregnant by her boyfriend, Guy (Nino Castelnuovo). When Guy is drafted into the army, Genevieve marries diamond merchant Roland Cassard (Marc Michel), even though she still loves Guy. She is destined for one last encounter with her true love, in a frosty Esso gas station.

A wonderful film that should look gorgeous in HD.

Yep, I need this. I only just watched the film within the last couple months and it easily shot up somewhere in my top 50 of all time.

Thumbs up

Cant wait for this.
Equally as good and in my opinion better is the superb "Les Demoisselles de Rochefort"

StudioCanal's output is the definition of hit and miss.

Please be good.

To be honest the French could sing about anything and it would sound great but I just listened to some of the score and it's so beautiful, looking forward to this one.

I wonder how this will compare to the Arte BD coming out in France on Nov 20.

I'm guessing the Arte disc will be region-free, while the UK Studio Canal will probably be region B-locked.

This is one of my favorite films, I'm actually going to see the restored version tonight at the Chinese Theater here in LA.

I saw the restoration tonight and it looks staggering. It looks like the film was shot yesterday (on 60s film stock, of course).

I can also confirm that the color timing is roughly the same as the lifelike colors on the 2002 Koch DVD and the UK DVD. It does not match the French discs, which apparently have a very, very heavy blue tint.

The difference between the Koch disc and the French disc is especially noticeable in the marriage shot and the Christmas tree shot here:
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/Review...bourg.htm#tuoc

The restoration was supervised by Agnes Varda and her two children with Demy, the daughter was here with her mother tonight to introduce the restoration.

Can't wait to get it on BD, just waiting for reviews to come in of the 11/20 French disc and this one, particularly about region status of the discs.

I like this movie a lot, but I like 'The Young Girls of Rochefort' even more.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg Blu-ray REVIEW

This release isn't identical to the French release. It is very good, but it is different.

Thanks for the review Pro-B.

I've got the movie on pre-order and was already looking forward to it, but the review's whet the appetite even more - sounds like it's a fantastic release. Great news!

I never pre-order Studio Canal Blu-rays anymore until I've read a review - too risky (I still get emotional when I think about what they did to Plein Soleil). Great to see that this is getting a deservedly decent release, and thanks for the review - my order has gone in.
