Default PS4 vs Xbox One Home entertainment features.

I am picking up a PS4 but was wondering how it compares to the Xbox one in regards to home entertainment value (not gaming.).

I know both will play BD but does one have cooler entertainment features than the other?

PS4 does 3D Blu-ray and xbone doesn't.

Overall, i'd say PS4 has the edge in that regard since before that tidbit they were pretty much equal. I'm not sure on the exact technical specification but there is a possibility that PS4 hardware might be better on a media capability too.

I think the NFL app is exclusive to One.

Depends on how smooth the BD player is.

If I'm only thinking about home entertainment value, that comes first. If that's not important to you..

If you like cable (I hate cable)... Xbox One.
If you like an overflow of endless media apps.. Xbox One.
An operating system that's easy for the wife since not tech genius.. Xbox One.
Cosmetics (Look of system in HT) .. Xbox One.
Full HD Skype & Voice commands .. Xbox One.

So yeah I think that's it.

Netflix & BD movie playback.. PS4
Gamer only?.. PS4

Gizmodo made a chart that lists all of the streaming services available on both and which are exclusive.

Well if you ask me, I personally like PS4 design better but I can easily see the Xbox One not being confused of as a gaming console.

You can tell the list isn't accurate when you see Twitch being "exclusive" to Xbox One. It's not.

In the End, Media Apps will be equivalent, particularly when the HBO Go exclusivity period ends.

So on one side (Xbox One) you'll have a system with motion detection (voice commands will be available on both) that can control your TV, DVR and your Home Theater, with a pass-through for TV, and integration for those who want to watch TV and play games at the same time .
The NFL agreement (and EA) might be a big thing though, if you're big into TV sports (couldn't care less myself).

On the other, you have a device (PS4) that beside being a full fledged Blu-Ray player (3D), will also integrate services that will leverage the Sony catalog (they have said that is their intention), hence with privileged access to

- Music catalogue (the Music Unlimited app is already superior to the Xbox Music app)
- Video apps (I actually use Vidzone quite a bit these days per example)

And access to the following resources for leverage: Sony Music Entertainment (Columbia Records, RCA, Epic...) & Sony Pictures Entertainment (Tristar, Columbia, Sony Pictures Television, ...)

This is the wrong place to ask because you will mostly get just the PRO SONY comments.

This thread is not exclusive to fans of PS. Xbox fans can contribute to this as well.

I think Sony's will be better just because nothing is behind a paywall. Since you mentioned no gaming you wont want to pay $30 a year for live just to use the apps.

Was there a hidden price drop of Xbox Live I'm not aware of?

Ain't it still $60/per year?

I'm definitely keeping both Live & PSN. Who knows, I might want to play online one day.

$30 is still $30 and if he is not wanting it to game that is a cost he can avoid going the PS4 route.

the fu<k?!?!? The PS4 looks very sleek, modern, gorgeous! The Xbone looks like a 1985 VCR! All that's missing is the blinking "12:00" on the front of it!

I don't think the ps4 looks sleek, modern or gorgeous at all. If it was gloss instead of a cheap matte finish then perhaps, though I'm not too fond of it's shape either. It certainly doesn't match the design quality of high end home theatre gear IMO. I like the look of the Xbox One slightly better, however it's not that great looking either, particularly with the slits all over it. I think out of all the equipment I own, it's going to be the ugliest piece in my setup
