Default Playing CD-R discs on PS3

Does anyone here know if the PS3 can play video files on a CD-R? The files on the disc are in Windows Media Player format and I heard the PS3 can play these type of MPEG files.

I don't believe the PS3 will play Windows Media Video. It will play WMA. It plays MPEG-2, 4, AVC and maybe a couple other video formats.

WMV files are not the same as MPEG so it won't play, like Saiyan said.

When playing files OFF a CD, it's best if you copy to the HDD first. The CD transfer rate can be a bit of a problem for HD movie files. DVD-R/RE would be better.

What software is used to make h264 video that plays?
I have used QTPRo for Windows and it works but puts it in .mp4 header. I would prefer to use ProCoder 3 or Sorenson Squeeze. Neither can be played. PC3 uses .h264 and they dont even register with Playstation 3. Squeeze uses .mp4 AVC but the video wont play- audio plays though.

Watch out with .MPEG files on a standard data CD-R. I have no experience with PS3 and it's filesystem, but as with other players, I believe a fixed disc structure should be present, isn't it?

You could try MPEG Streamclip, although I'm not sure if it's available for Windows. On a Mac it will convert any format video to any format video. A free programme but requires (on the Mac) a £15 mpeg2 code thing.

The PS3 does play WMV files and MPG files. I tried it the other day. This was off a DVD. CD's with WMV and MPG files will play too.

Latest 1.7. My bad I meant WMA. It all sounds familiar. LOL. Anybody know if PS3 plays MOV files?

I think that with all that's good and the power of the PS3, it should be able to play more formats.

I think it's just the matter of firmware. I think down the road it will support more computer formats.

You can't play the .MOV file directly. It has to be converted to a .MP4 file. If the MP4 is coded with other than H.264 it won't play

Apple's trailer are in H.264 and changing the containers from .MOV to .MP4 takes less than a minute.

If you're running 1.7, you have to physically go into the System setup somewhere (I forget where) and actually enable wmv playback.

I stumbled on this today. There is a menu item for it somewhere in the system setup.

Just checked and it's still only ATRAC and WMA you can activate.
