Default Confirmation: DLNA, CD and MP3 support will come after launch on PS4

http://www.computerandvideogames.com...firms-yoshida/

Quote:
Sony's President of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has said the firm will "eventually" add MP3, music CD and DLNA server support to PS4.

Yoshida told GiantBomb that Sony was "caught off guard" by the uproar sparked by the announcement that PS4 would not support such typically rudimentary media features at launch.

"The biggest surprise for us all internally at Sony was; there were so many people who passionately reacted to our announcement that there's no MP3 support and DLNA support on day one," said Yoshida.

Some suggested the lack of music playback features was part of a ruse at Sony to drive subscriptions of its cloud music service, Music Unlimited, but Yoshida insisted this "it's not like that."

"Like we've been saying, the focus has been always on the game features, and some of the features we wanted but we could get in on day one - game features - we were very disappointed," he said.

"We didn't really think about MP3 or DLNA. We always thought that we're going to do that eventually - we've been doing it with all the [PlayStation] products. So it caught us off guard. People don't really talk about these features but when we say we don't have it some people get really mad and [say], 'I cancelled the pre-order'."

Yoshida went on to confirm, "So as we speak, the teams in Japan and US - the systems guys - are discussing how and when we can put these features on PS4."

Meanwhile, Sony has confirmed that PS4 users can overlay music on top of in-game audio using Music Unlimited.

PS4 is set for a launch date of November 15 in US and November 29 in Europe and Latin America.
Not sure I buy the "we were so surprised people wanted this" thing, but at least it's an official confirmation.
Surprised that they would also include the Audio CD support, but hey

I'll be happy only If it means we can copy the files onto the music folder like we currently can (or did?) with PS3

Yeah those were the same two paragraphs I picked out. This was a business decision no doubt about it. They just didn't expect that many people to notice, similar to some of the bad decisions Microsoft made that they suddenly had a "change of heart" on.

It's a media server that lets you stream music & videos from a computer to a system. It works for copying, too.

Digital Living Network Alliance Server

It is basically a media server that other devices can connect to. This allows it to stream video, audio, images etc to the device. Windows can operate as a DLNA server with shared folders that can be picked up on the network. I think OSX can too but I don't use it.

I personally bought a specific device to act as my DLNA server similar to this. It is the size of an external harddrive case and runs a custom OS and can be connected to my network. It is low power so can always be on, is running raid 0+1 so data is mirrored and I can access my media from anywhere.

The best thing is if you have a device that can act as a DLNA client and it is on the same network as a DLNA server, it just automatically connects and you can instantly browse the shared folders and play content. The PS3 is such a device along with pretty much every electronic device that can connect to a network. It is a trivial application to support these days.

JamesOrlandlo had the "tldr" version. It's a way to stream media to a device.

Honestly I was surprised people cared that much too, but glad to see they're listening to their (very loud) customers!

Not having mp3 or CD support is a huge deal to me. It wasn't going to stop me from buying the PS4, but it's definitely a huge bummer. Glad to hear they will be patching that functionality in at some point, but like someone else said, I won't be happy if we can't copy the CD or mp3's to the music folder on the system.

Default A firmware update or software update to the PS4 to allow audio CD's to be played?

The Microsoft XBOX One supports audio CD’s. The original 2006 model Sony PS3 supported both SACD’s and CD’s until Sony dropped SACD support from the new model PS3's. I was disappointed to learn that the Sony Playstation 4 only supports CD-ROM data discs and no support for standard audio CD’s.

It would be ideal if a firmware update or software application could be purchased that would allow PS4 owners to play standard audio CD’s.

I also had a bunch of CD players that played CDs.

My old Laserdisc Player also played CDs.

I have some computers that play CDs.

My portable DVD player for the car plays CDs.

I think the original poster is really onto something here.

What's a CD? *strokes vinyl collection*

Seriously, I've got tons of things that'll play CDs. I've got tons of CDs. I never put them in the things that'll play them so I can't see this being top of the list.
