Default Press Releases and Revealing Disc Content Early - Purpose of Them

I've been wondering why distributors make press releases and reveal the full breakdown of upcoming titles 1-2 months before release date instead of revealing nothing and just say "If you want to know the contents of the DVD/Blu-ray, wait until its on the shelves because we're not telling you."

Because I spoke to one of Roadshow's receptionists yesterday regarding the Australian December 4 release of a MMPR Box Set and how there's some concern amongst the fan base as to its contents and I mentioned to her how American and UK distributors reveal disc contents a month before its release and she said they don't do that. They do not reveal contents to the public and if people want to know what's on it, wait until its on store shelves.

And how's that working out for them?

That's like a car company saying we got a brand new model coming out but you'll have to go the dealer to see what you get with it. A lot of companies use press releases and reveal a lot details to the media to drive demand and pique consumer interest. Even Apple releases enough info about iDevice products/enhancements because few surprises are good ones in the real world.

I refuse to believe you are being serious.

I am being very serious. A receptionist basically said that to me yesterday. Even if a new box set was coming out in a week's time and the contents was entirely different from the American and UK releases, they won't tell you what's on it. It could be 100% correct but they won't in case what they tell you is wrong.
