Alright yall I want to hear your thoughts on this. I'm about to buy a program for my laptop to keep it secure. Of course I'm thinking of McAfee, Norton, and Kapersky.

Which one do you think is the best and why? Please rank them if you don't mind.

AVG and Avast are free, and aren't loaded down with a buch of software that slows down your computer. Just antivirus, it is really refreshing.

Oh, and I work on computers for a living. I have seen most everything, and the free ones have stood up to viruses just as good if not better than anything else out.

I've used both Norton and McAfee, but between the two I prefer Norton only because I feel like I can tweak it more. Although I admit it's a bit of a memory hog, but I always do the custom install so I can minimize the overhead.

But also, as another line of defense when web browsing I'd also recommend trying Firefox with the NoScript plugin. It's a script blocker that blocks 3rd party scripts from loading (the ones you don't even know about). Everyone I've recommended it to and have used it properly over the last 2-3 years have called me less and less for slowness issues. My wife especially - I used to be on her laptop every couple of weeks cleaning out garbage. I haven't done any maintenance (other than disk fragmentation checks and virus def updates, etc.) on her last laptop since we bought it back in 06. Still runs smoothly.

None of them. Especially Norton. Stay away from Norton. Trust me on that one.
McAfee will slow down your computer completely as well... but at least it protects you.
Havent heard of Kapersky... no comment there.

I would go with Avast if you can. Also, If you want anything for free - just send me a pm. Ill gladly "buy" you a serial code for them.

But still- Go with avast if you must have anti-virus. I personally dont think it does squat. If somebody wants to design some sort of a virus, whats norton/avast/McAffe gonna do? They cant immediately build virus protection and release an update for them.
I could go create a simple little "shutdown every 0.00000008 seconds" line of code and rar it up with an image...
The second you click the image your computer will shut down. Then, every time you start it up, 0.00000008 seconds afterwards your computer will shut down.
Virus protection wouldnt do anything. It wouldnt even know whats happening since thats not a "virus".

People tend to think everything "bad" on their computer is a virus...

If your really worried - yes - get a mac. You definately wont regret that decision... but not everyone has that much money to just go decide "hey... Lets spend 1000 bucks today!".

Anyway... Thats my 2 cents. No virus protection is probably the best way since it wont completely slow down your computer, but if you must - get avast.
Good luck.

They miss about as often as the other ones you pay for?

And I've found less often in cases of Norton and Mcafee....

Avast for Anti-virus and Zonealarm Firewall - both free.

I work with computers for a living and Norton is the spawn of the devil while McAfee eats CPU cycles for fun.

They are all much the same to be honest with actually catching the little beggers for the reviews i've seen.

Free is good

I would use AVG only. Depend on windows firewall and your router. Pick up Spybot S&D for spyware... norton and/or mcafee will slow your pc to a crawl... not to mention they are only as effective as any other in detection. If you are careful where you go you ought to be ok.

I would rather throw a PC down a flight of stairs than install Norton or McAfee on it. At least with the stairs there would be a chance the machine would still be usable at the end of it.

Then again, I switched to Mac about 4 years ago, so what the hell do I know.

BitDefender seems to be slowing my laptop down considerably...any suggestions?

I'm currently just running the TRIAL? Do you think this would change if I got the full version?

I just want a program that has a decent interface and works well without consuming a lot of my laptops resources and slowing it down to the speed of a camel.

At first BitDefender seemed OKAY but its becoming more and more obvious that its slowing my computer down. Both in terms of start up, internet page loading, and overall movement/interaction.

Once again what do you guys think would fit my need. I looked into avast but the interface was not all good in my eyes.
