I got the US release yesterday, not a bad film but certainly no District 9.

No I'm waiting for a good 2-disc release.

So far Japan and Italy have those.
The one from Japan is pretty expensive (30+ euros) and I'm leaning towards the one from Italy, but it's an exclusive to one shop only.

It's a pretty impressive set actually.

*Collaboration - Crafting the performances in Elysium

*Engineering Utopia: Creating a society in the sky

*Extended scene

*Visions of 2154: An interactive exploration of the art and design of Elysium

*The journey to Elysium:a three part feature - Envisioning Elysium. Capturing Elysium. Enhancing Elysium

*In support of story: The visual effects of Elysium

*The technology of 2154

The back of the packaging also boasts that the film has been mastered in 4K too.

As nice as that is, what happens in a few years time when 4K isn't good enough? Can they just remaster it like film or is it stuck at that quality forever?

adamhopelies - thanks for taking the time to list/type out

Seems pretty much the same as the US version. I think I'll grab a copy after Xmas now!

Thumbs up

Just watched this for the second time (first at cinema) and still enjoyed it.

PQ is pretty much reference. AQ is solid, nice and balanced although it does seem to be mixed quiet low in volume. Once its pumped up, sounds superb.

A lot of CG heavy films nowadays are rendered at 2k such as The Avengers and The Hobbit so even 4k isn't possible with them without all the CG being re-rendered so having Elysium already mastered at 4k future proofs it to a certain degree but yes they will be stuck at whatever res they finished them at without spending a lot of money.

Thanks I realise that was a somewhat stupid question, and am going to ask another one.

If Sony wanted a film in 8k for whatever reason, and money/time were no object, would it be possible for them to take an FX-free original camera shot and increase the resolution to 8k, with it looking as good as something natively shot in 8k? (I know there'll be some kind of upscaling process avaliable, but is there a process they could use to make it look "less upscaled" and more like a native 8k shoot?).

[I'm not sure I worded that very well, so apologies if you have no clue what I'm going on about.]

Müller in Germany has a pretty neat 2-Disc Mediabook edition of this movie. Picked it up, looks pretty sweet.
