Default I got a ps3 last week

Well i found a PS3 for $220 on craigslist and i was wondering i read somewhere that ps3 will not be able to work with newer formats of blu-ray disc and that you have to buy a new bluray player to play the next generation of bluray disc. The article was on digg a while back

Wanted to know if this was true

1) welcome to the club. the ps3 is pretty freaking awesome, especially if you have an HDMI receiver.

2) that's just about the most full o' crap fudtastic article i've heard of yet. the PS3 is already updated to BD profile 2.0, which is the last profile on the horizon.

Welcome onboard.

This is misleading information. Now you are in good hands!

As previous posters have pointed out PS3 is an outstanding blu-ray player. It produces a stunning picture when coupled with a good quality display. Sony is committed to evolve PS3 with the blu-ray technology. Sony can evolve PS3 as most functions in PS3 are implemented in firmware due to the PS3's fast cell processor. Also, Sony is good at this with regular firmware upgrades. Firmware upgrades are automatic, you just need to connect PS3 to the Internet.

A few things:
  1. Congrats on the excellent deal on the PS3! $220 is a damned good price.
  2. The Playstation's firmware is upgradable via the computer or connecting the PS3 to the internet so don't worry.
  3. Finally, welcome to the blu family. You're gonna have a blast!

Question soon to be a PS3 owner!!

well, i'm about to purchase a PS3 40G for 399,99$ with monster hdmi cable instead of buying sony hdmi ps3 cable and also a couple wi-fi controllers. My question is, should i wait before buying the blu-ray remote control or i can use the ps3 controller for the blu-ray movies ? and i don't have a home theater yet, should i buy optic cable right away or spend money elsewhere ?

thanks for your help guys.

Ty your best bet may be to go to SonyStyle and open an acct there. That will save you $100 off your purchase which you can use to buy the remote and put some cash in your pocket.

B&M's like CC often give away the remote for free w/ the purchase of the PS3 if you are willing to wait for a sale.

Just some suggestions to help you out.

Smile thanks for your help guys!!

hey there, i think i'm gonna buy the remote for the ps3 blu-ray drive. And for SonyStyle, the only promotion i did see was a free game when you purchase the console. The only problem with the ''bonus game'' its that we don't know what we get, not pretty explanatory in terms and conditions from sony. Anyway, i'm gettin it ( the PS3 ) next saturday and i can't wait. The first game i'm gonna buy is Call of Duty( of course!! ) and first blu-ray movie, don't know yet.

I forgot to mention something, does it really make a difference with or w/out an air-cooler ? And I've just read on this forum that another version of PS3 will be out in June ( 80GB ). Isn't enough 40GB ?

my older 20gb PS3 can get pretty warm, but my new 40gb barely puts out any heat. The PS3 was designed very well and I do not believe an air cooler is necessary, just keep the PS3 in an open area.

is 40gb enough? I think it is.

I converted my older 20gb into 120gb and I still probably dont even use 20gb.

...but its there if I need it.

So, to sum up things, PS3 is an all-around device. It can play games, watch movies, put song or video in it, also have a PS3 store with tons of downloads and movie trailers to download and you can delete them if you don't need them in your HDD. Plus, i might add, i don't really think an update will ever take all of the 40GB.

Well thanks again early adopter of the blu life!!

I noticed you mentioned monster cables, if you want to save a decent chunk of change, get it from monocables, or bluejeancables, they are the same basic cables (hdmi is hdmi and will work the exact same no matter who makes it). Also if you have HDMI you shouldn't need an optic cable if you have an HDMI capable receiever (or buy one, since I notice you said you didn't have a home theater yet). About the remote, I use my controller, haven't gotten around to buying a remote, every time I plan to buy one, I end up with a movie instead.

If you ever decide that your hard drive isn't enough space, it is VERY easy to upgrade it, and there's a step by step guide in the PS3 manual, or a well written sticky one on the forums here.

Hope this helps!

This certainly helps guys, the main reason i want monster cable is because my g/f is working at an eletronic store and monster are life warranty so I don't mind paying 69$ for it. As for the ''future'' receiver with a home theater this will be in another topic i guess and another hard choices. I've been a Denon guy for a long time and I know it is not the best quality but they do 3 output HDMI cheaper than Pioneer Elite product. Like I said it is not for now anyway

thanks again!

Ty this is what I was referring to about the free remote deals. iNCREDiPiNOY has posted the newest CC ad schedule and sure enough you get the sony blu-ray remote free w/ the purchase of a PS3.

A HDMI cable from Monoprice is cheaper than US$10. But do this math and see which has more value to you: US$59 (US$69-US$10 for the cable) earning interest in your savings account over YOUR lifetime, or US$69 spent as soon as the cashier punches ENTER?
