Criterion George Washington (2000)

Quote:
Over the course of one hot summer, a group of children in the decaying rural South must confront a tangle of difficult choices. An ambitiously constructed, elegantly photographed meditation on adolescence, the first full-length film by director David Gordon Green features remarkable performances from an award-winning ensemble cast. George Washington is a startling and distinct work of contemporary American independent cinema.

I've always heard great things about this film. Never seen it but I've seen the directors other films which I understand feel like a totally different person made them. I will definitely check it out. Criterion is killing it this year so far with titles and we're just up to March.

Wow, no kidding. Lots of White's reviews come off as nothing more than trolling.

Wow, that kinda diminishes my view of Criterion's professionalism...
Guess I won't have to bother reading it.

I like some of White's writings from earlier in his career. It has been more in the last 8-10 years that he's gone overboard in being the contrarian opinion. I know the Chris Nolan fanboys hat him with a passion.

Yeah. This one was written in 2002 for the DVD release, so he was a little saner then.

Yeah he did an article on Brian De Palma back around the time of Bonfire of the Vanities (1990/91) for Film Comment that I thought was very well written and was a good counterarguement to those who seemed to hate the film because it deviated heavily from the book.

Did you see All the Real Girls, Undertow, and Snow Angels? It seems maybe you only have Pineapple Express, Your Highness, and The Sitter in mind, about which I would agree with you that those comedies seem like they came from a different director completely.

George Washington is an amazing independent film, using what appears to be non-professional actors/actresses. Extremely well done, and I like the stream of consiousness element...

Also agree that DGG's earlier films (up through & including Snow Angels) are far superior to his later, "Hollywood-ized" comedy films, i.e. Pineapple Express & The Sitter. Not that these latter two films aren't funny; I actually thought The Sitter was a somewhat clever re-make of the amusing '80's flick Adventures in Babysitting....

All the Real Girls & Undertow are especially impressive, IMHO..

It was released as a dual format. The new release drops the DVD. The answer to your question was also posted right above your post.
