United Kingdom The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Ltd Ed Steelbook

I received an email from Amazon uk advising now available to pre-order:

"Dear Amazon.co.uk Customer,

As you have shown interest in Peter Jackson's epic The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, we thought you might like to know that The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is now available to order on DVD, Blu-ray and Limited Edition Steelbook. Once you've ordered, you will be notified via email when the release date is confirmed."

Although at the time only the DVD and Blu-ray/3D editions are up for pre-order it shouldn't be long til we see a link for the steelbook pre-order.

Another one to hold off on then, as there will no doubt be an extended edition released a few months afterwards.
No need to double dip.

Hmm...

Was there even a EE version released anywhere but the US? I know BB had that stupid 3D only one.

Why, oh why is there so much 3D hate. I happen to enjoy it quite a bit and am always sad when the steel doesn't include a 3D copy of a movie that was released theatrically that way and generally will pass on it.

This one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Hobbit-U...dp/B00DY6490Y/

Unlike the BB version, this one contains a 2D movie disc as well.

Brilliant news. And, even better, as WB now seem to include 3D discs as standard in their steelbooks, it should be the same for this one, unlike the AUJ steelbook last week. (Not good news for those who don't like 3D printed on there though as it's inevitable)

I would love for something like this to be the design. Would match the Bilbo/Gollum theme from last year.

Good yes. Bad because they will no doubt plaster the stupid 3D logo all over it. God I hate 3D.

Absolutely zero reason to order this since it's not the extended cut. Definitely will wait.

Zero reason for you perhaps - personally, I like having the theatrical cut as well, plus I enjoy watching it throughout the year rather than waiting until November.

I agree that the Extended Edition is likely to be the dfinitve release but who knows, I may prefer the theatrical? I did for Return of the King. So, come November 2015, I'll be very happy to own a steelbook trilogy of the theatrical editions and the very nice Extended Editions.

I do agree to a point though, that if you're only willing to buy it once and aren't in a rush to watch it again then waiting for the EE is sensible, if only for the incredible making-ofs.

That's my feelings with Unexpected Journey. The Extended/New scenes weren't really all that great and the new Goblin King song might have put me off watching it again. That was very unnecessary in my opinion.

I'm a bigger fan of the Goblin King than most seem to be so I didn't mind his song (and really enjoyed his extra banter with the dwarves). Bilbo in Rivendell was what made the AUJ:EE worth it for me. Essential to his overall character arc and made his look back at it when leaving and his decision to return to it later on all that more meaningful.

Certainly though, 13 minutes didn't have the same impact as the 30+mins added into FOTR (enhanced it) and TTT (improved it) or the 40 mins added to ROTK (dragged it down slightly).

Agreed. While I enjoyed the other extra scenes, just the few minutes of scenes that were added to Rivendell made the Extended Edition fully worth it to me.
