Speed Racer opens this Friday. Even though I think Iron Man will be tops at the box office for a second week in a row, I thought I would still do the poll.
Where do you see Speed Racer coming in at for it's first weekend? |

Hmm, hard to say. Are they relying on people that saw it when it originally aired (or maybe re-runs) or did the show get a lot of exposure in recent years? If the younger crowd knows about it and liked it, I think it could do fairly well. If they're relying on the older crowd, I don't think it'll do very well.
I voted 20-30 million for it's first weekend. Last edited by owa; 05-04-2008 at 11:46 PM. |

I found this bit about the budget, $120 million to make Speed Racer. It better make at least 50 million here in the first week. I'm sure it will cover the budget worldwide in the first week or two but that's never enough for studios, they want the US boxoffice to cover it...or so it seems. Anyone know why?
Here is the story about other Anime titles being bought/put into production, interesting. Leonardo DiCaprio will produce two films based on the popular anime story Akira, set in a rebuilt Tokyo after a mysterious explosion decimated the city. The first of the Warner Bros. films, to be set in "New Manhattan," is scheduled for summer 2009. •Director M. Night Shyamalan will direct The Last Airbender, an adaptation of the popular Asian-influenced Nickelodeon series about a young hero with the power to manipulate the elements. It's due July 2, 2010. •Steven Spielberg will adapt Ghost in the Shell, a futuristic crime thriller based on the 1989 Japanese comic, or manga, that spawned a half-dozen films and video games. No release date has been set. But for now, all eyes are on Racer, seen by many as a barometer of audiences' appetites for big-screen anime adaptations. Domestic box office for Japanese anime features has been mixed. While the Pokémon franchise has proved appealing to kids, little anime has caught on with broader audiences. According to Box Office Mojo, the highest-grossing anime film geared to older moviegoers is 2002's Spirited Away, which took in $10.1 million. That won't cut it when your budget is $120 million, the reported cost of Racer. |

I think a few things have to be taken into account...
1) Target audience. Speed Racer is PG and meant for all ages. That's who has been hit the hardest with advertising. I walked into a Toys-R-Us yesterday and saw many young boys walking around with Speed Racer toys. 2) IMAX. This has been huge for many flicks that had so-so buzz. 3) Word of mouth. If the reviews are good, people will go. 4) I doubt Iron Man will hold up it's big numbers. Most of the people interested in it saw it this weekend. I bet Speed will do well this weekend and continue to hold up. $100+ when it's run is over. |

You can see into the future can you also give me the winning lottery numbers. If you have never watched the Original Speed Racer Cartoons then how can you say this is a mistake This movie is a live action version of those cartoons. The trailers I have seen mirror the cartoons Plus this is PG most of the big movies coming out are PG-13 I dont think to many parents will take there young kids to Dark Knight and other than Wall-E and Kung-Fu Panda there are not to many movies this summer for the whole family this movie will do well
