I don't think the speakers matter so much here, but what kind of receiver do you have, and how is your ps3 connected to it? The PS3 can output 7.1, I have mine hooked up to my Denon via HDMI, and get 7.1 from movies which have it (although New Line movies have an issue w/ their 7.1 DTS-MA encoding, search for more on that).

it's your receiver that needs to run 7.1, not the PS3.....

What receiver do you have?

There are very few movies with a 7.1 sound track.
The PS3 has incredible 7.1 audio when playing games. I marvel at the sound when my son is playing the new PS3 games.

+1 The PS3 does 7.1 just fine. There are very few soundtracks out there that run past 5.1 however. It all depends on how the original movie audio track was mastered. For those 5.1 or 6.1 tracks you encounter, set your receiver to matrix the info to 7.1 in order to have surround sound from all speakers.

I play movies AND games in 7.1
It depends on a lot of things.
1, HDMI is a must!
2, make sure your receiver is set right, if could be on a presetting that does not have 7.1, change it to surround decode or something equivalent
3, the source. Not all movies and games are 7.1. Some 7.1 DTS-HD MA movies have trouble coming out at 7.1 as well, but we assume that will be fixed (limited to select titles).

Honestly 5.1 is good enough for most things, but 7.1 is sweet. Playing Folklore in 7.1 is a real treat cause you really sound like you are in a forest or a war zone or under water, etc.

So first check your hook up, it HAS to be HDMI.
Then check your receiver (PS3->Receiver->TV) and make sure it is set to decode in surround 7.1 and not a presetting that does what it wants.
Then check your source, it might not be 7.1.

Good Luck

clarification: your audio goes through audio from the PS3 to the receiver?

In order to get 7.1 out of ANY Hi-Def player, you must be using an HDMI cable. Optical cable can't transfer information fast enough to support HD audio streams.

If your receiver is 7.1 but HDMI passthrough, you will only get 7.1 sound out of the analog inputs in the back. Since the PS3 doesn't have analog outputs (only optical and HDMI) then there is no way to get them to connect. Usually, only the higher end Blu-ray players will carry analog outputs on the back.

Ah... I see now. Just checked the specifications on his receiver. He should have opted for a slightly more expensive unit.

The problem that you are having travie24 is that your receiver is only able to send the full video and audio experience straight through the HDMI ports without any redirection for the speakers attached to the receiver. So, your HDMI is fine for video, but it will only get you audio to your TV. This sucks for you because the PS3 only offers the optcial audio option as a substitute, which can't handle data transfer speeds necessary for 7.1, or any HD audio for that matter, playback.

PAGE #29 of your owner's manual will explain it for you. You can find the manual here online if it isn't handy to get to at home... http://www.onkyousa.com/download/own...fm?cat=Systems
