Amazon Japan has an "early" Japanese release of this set on February 12, 2014:

The three-disc set is from Paramount Japan, and will contain Japanese and English audio and subtitles.

Great stuff, will def buy this. Chamberlain is a criminally underrated actor. What a pairing between him and Mifune!

And here’s an interesting surprise: Paramount is releasing the Shogun miniseries, starring Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune, on Blu-ray sometime likely in Q1 2014. [Editor’s Note: We originally posted a street date of 3/25/14, but we’ve been informed that is not yet finalized and is likely to change. Just FYI.

booo just boo this is like the Twin Peaks set supposed to come out in March as well but no more info

Hmm... If it's out in Germany already on the 6th of Feb, it might even hit Scandinavia or the UK quite soon. Fingers crossed.

EDIT: Found it!! Sweden release already on the 29th of January: http://www.discshop.se/filmer/bluray...lu_ray/P120422

Pre-ordered!

This is great news!

I was starting to think that my DVD set was the best that I was going to have for Shogun. I will be picking this up in 2014 for sure.

Hope the March 25th date is official, if not I'll likely import it. I'm guessing it'll likely be region free since it's being released in multiple countries/regions including Japan. I do have a backup all-region player though just in case.

I recently got the new Centennial DVD, which looks very good and is bargain priced. It looks like the film elements for this huge miniseries are in good shape, and it would probably make a fine blu-ray as far as PQ. But I'm having a little trouble getting into it still, even though it really should be my cup of tea. Can you give me a few thoughts about why it's your favorite miniseries? That might help.

Anyway, Shogun is probably my favorite miniseries from the 1970s, and I'm likely to pick this up when the price is right. I watched it again via streaming a year or two ago with my teen son, and most of it stood up very well. Like some other miniseries of that time, it has near movie production values, and is a fairly faithful adaptation of this huge novel, which I devoured as a teenager.

I hope this is a sign that more miniseries might make it to blu. Some I'd like to see include Masada, North and South, Roots/Roots: The Next Generations, The Thorn Birds, etc.

I'd love to see a Blu-ray release of The Stand, The Winds of War and War and Rememberance

As far as Shogun goes, I will definitely purchase it at some point.

I consider myself a "Roots" historian, and I've been pushing WB to release it on Blu-ray. The current dvd (actually every home video release) is not in the original eight-part format. I viewed the original broadcast at the Museum of Television and Radio in NYC. The openings that were cut on vhs/dvd featured actual storyline footage underneath the opening cast/crew titles (following the Mural Opening.) One sequence was George Hamilton singing a song as his carriage approached the Moore plantation. Another was longer footage of Chicken George arriving home from England. There were several shots of the plantation and working in the fields. Also, the end credits are a mess now, showing actors not in the episodes they are credited with, and some credits missing altogether. The original Mural Opening is slightly different as well....originally, the title "Roots" was displayed as the book rising up and "AN ABC NOVEL FOR TELEVISION" on-screen. I have frames of those missing openings from an ebay auction where someone was selling the 16mm version. I hope they can find the original missing pieces of the puzzle and release the series as originally presented (or as close as possible given legal rights.)

Kind of curious how one does that, exactly?

So is James Clavell's Shogun going to be the same Paramount master across all regions, but the encodes may be different? I really want this in the best possible quality since it's my all-time favorite mini-series. I might be tempted to import if one of the non-U.S. discs has a significantly higher bitrate, etc., or superior special content.

We won't know that until the set is released and people have a chance to review it .

I expect to watch Shogun right after a Twin Peaks and X-Files marathon. I might take a break and watch my new copies of The Abyss and True Lies though.
