Or they could just include an alternate subtitle track. Weird that they don't do that. - seems like the perfect solution, unless it's hard-subbed.

Thanks for the explanation though - now at least I know the reasoning behind it!

If they create two separate sub tracks for a relatively trivial thing, it's just another thing to worry about when it comes to BD production (and Sentai's QC is iffy at best--making things too complicated is a glitch in the making). So they just opt for the odd-even episode method. If it were a movie, though, they would have probably went with an alternate sub track.

So through 23 episodes and it's neat to see the progression of the animation (Less crude) and the new opening sequence (closer to BOTP). Loving this set!

I received my replacement blu-ray case from Rightstuf to replace the first case which arrived broken. Amazingly fast service - I just talked to them a few days ago about this, after christmas, and I got it yesterday! And they shipped it free too. Great customer service!

If this had been Amazon, I would have had to ship the entire set back to them and wait for a new one to arrive, when it was fine except for the first case.

Through the first 9 episodes here, absolutely amazing. My youngest tagged along and she's hooked.

Awesome to hear there's a new fan getting into it! I'm a bit slow here - I just watched episode 3 tonight. I'm really enjoying it. I've never seen the series, other than as Battle of the Planets ages ago growing up, so I don't remember most of these too well, especially since they're so different uncut. Part 3 had a huge death toll. I guess a lot of them do uncut. The US version always had an explanation how everybody got away just in time, or everything was staffed by robots, or some such silliness.

I hope this paves the way for some of my other favorite childhood cartoons to make it to blu-ray;

Astro Boy
Mazinger Z (Tranzor Z)
Starblazers
Robotech
Voltron

WEll, the Robotech is already in Bluray (sort of).
The original Japanese series from which it was edited, is released, although I'm not sure if it has English subtitles.

Alas, there are no English subtitles on that Blu-ray... and chances of any Macross series hitting US Blu-ray are plain depressing.

It's not blu ray, but Mazinger Z is coming to DVD uncut next year.

Definitely could use some more 60s and 70s anime on BD though.

Space Battleship Yamato season 1 was released on blu-ray in Japan but it's extremely expensive, and contains no English audio or subs. It looks amazing though. The US Starblazers DVDs and Yamato movies look absolutely terrible.

The new Yamato 2199 series was also released on blu-ray in Japan, and it looks stunning. Basically a newly-animated version of the original Yamato series, remaining very faithful to the original. I wish we could get this in the US.

Yamato 2199 will be making its way to the US sometime soon, under the Starblazers brand. It remains to be seen how much of that branding will be in the actual presentation, but slips of "Argo" in subtitles from early promotional materials have some (yours truly included) a bit worried.

Ugh. It's not the 70's anymore. We all know the Argo is really the Yamato. Why don't they just leave it alone?

Was'nt this called battle of the planet when i was a kid. Then changed to g-force. That is why i could not understand them calling that animal movie g-force a few years ago.

Both were bastardised versions of the original, which this is.

G-Force less so than BotP, but neither were anywhere near as good as the original, and there were 6 episodes from the original series that were never adapted for either BotP or G-Force. A shame as these were from the tail end of the series.

BotP:

Quote:
Sandy Frank teamed up with Jameson Brewer to air on American television in 1978, in heavily edited form, as Battle of the Planets (BOTP for short).[11] Numerous scenes were cut and were replaced with new segments made by Gallerie International Films. These contained added characters 7-Zark-7 and his associates 1-Rover-1, and Susan in various space outposts. Other segments included the "Phoenix" flying in space. The quality of the new segments matched the original content and contained appearances of the "G-Force" and 7-Zark-7 together. New music was added and blended in with the original soundtrack. All 105 episodes were sourced, but 85 sporadic episodes were released. An animated TV Movie was made which combined several episodes into a new storyline. In this case, the violence was not cut.
G-Force:

Quote:
The series received a second English translation, courtesy of Turner Program Services and Fred Ladd, which was titled G-Force: Guardians of Space. The adaptation consisted of 85 episodes, spanning episodes 1-87 but skipping episodes 81 and 86. The series aired internationally beginning in 1987, but would not be aired in its entirety in the U.S until its run on Cartoon Network in 1995. While this version cut out much less of the original and had a relatively faithful translation, the voice acting and the background music (not to mention the Americanized names chosen for the characters) were widely panned.

Started working my way through the Gatchaman set. Loving it so far.

I grew up on BotP, and the only Gatchaman I have seen was on TV during a trip to Japan 15 years ago.

Much prefer the tone of the Gatchaman eps to the BotP originals I grew up on.

'Transmute!' is way cooler than 'Bird Go!'.

Ken is more of a dick than Mark.

Joe loves him some Bird Missiles!

For some reason Galactor doing all those Kaiju attacks across Earth and not a new planet each ep makes them seem a lot more OTT and wacky than in BotP - but in a fun way. I love that they doggedly hit all the James Bond beats in the first few episodes - stealing oil, stealing gold reserves, having underwater bases...

People actually die - both Galactor dudes and civilians. Reminds me of watching JPN DBZ compared to US DBZ back in the day.

I want to buy this set too but I'm a bit concerned about the contrast/brightness.
It seems too bright and less contrast in the screenshots..
I liked the DVD better in that area..

How is it in motion? Is it distracting?

I think it looks a little better in motion than in the still image. But, the blu does look a little washed out (soft) and bright compared to the dvd. Though I have grown to like the blu ray set a little bit better than what I did when I first bought it; my opinion is that the dvd set is still the best deal. I really did not have any complaints regarding the dvd box set other than that it took up a lot of room on my shelf. Now, comparing it to the blu ray, I can see that some of the colors were perhaps over-saturated but the look fit the show. Only problem is, the blu ray seemed to over-correct that problem and now has its own set of issues that did not exist before. There is also the issue with some missing extras and the extras being stretched out (an original 4:3 image now being widescreen). And, the protective box that holds the blu rays is not that sturdy at all.

Those screenshots from the DVDs are frequently much too dark and oversaturated, with details almost entirely disappearing.

The Blu-ray is much more consistent with how a lot of anime from the 1970s looks like.

Hi,

I was curious about the subtitles, I read in a review that the subs are very big, is this true?? or do they look ok?

If anyone can confirm this, I would appreciate a lot.

Thanks!
